 Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the above position(s) in the Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD). This position will be located at Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospitals within the Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine.

 

Blacktown and Mount Druitt hospitals are located in the Western Sydney local health district. Blacktown hospital has around 600 beds, has a Level 6 ICU unit, a busy emergency department and provides a large number of medical specialist services to the local community and beyond. Mount Druitt hospital functions as an elective surgical unit with available beds for overnight stay where required. We provide services for obstetrics, gynaecology, general surgery, bariatric surgery, urology, thoracic surgery, breast surgery, orthopaedic surgery, gastroenterology, respiratory and maxillofacial surgery. We do some emergency and elective paediatric anaesthesia within these specialties.

 

We have an active teaching program aimed at our Part 1 ANZCA examination and are involved in research, audit and quality assurance activities. We have an on-call service for after-hours emergency services. There is also a well-equipped SIM centre that we utilize for teaching and practicing emergency scenarios. Blacktown has an active pain service that provides care to surgical and non-surgical patients whilst being active in research and quality assurance.

 

The perioperative service is active in managing complex patients having complex procedures and takes great pride in seeing patients through the entirety of their perioperative journey. The Western Sydney population is very culturally and linguistically diverse and there are high rates of under-managed chronic diseases. The department is well regarded for interpersonal relations as well as supporting and ensuring the wellbeing of the junior medical officers.

 

Successful applicants will be involved in providing clinical services in anaesthesia at Blacktown and Mount Druitt hospitals as well as have a role in administration, teaching, quality assurance, research and acute pain. Allocation of duties will depend on the requirement of the department of anaesthesia and the skills and interests of the appointee. There are also roles for the successful candidate to involve themselves in the wider hospital activities particularly in regards SRMO teaching and supervision.

 

This position is also suitable for an adequately trained SIMG. Weighting may be given for candidates who have undertaken the ANZCA SIMG assessment process.

 

Applicants expecting to be awarded their Fellowship within six months, may be considered. If successful, the applicant may not be subsequently eligible to commence their appointment until after the relevant qualifications and requirements are formally completed.

 

Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Staff Specialists (State) Award.

Please outline how you satisfy the selection criteria listed below. In addressing the selection criteria, include any relevant skills, knowledge, qualifications and experience:

 

1.   Possess or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthesia or equivalent as provided for in the Staff Specialists (State) Award/ Health Insurance Act 1997. Be eligible for permanent residency or an appropriate working visa.

2.  Sound clinical knowledge in Anaesthesia demonstrated   through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position.

3.   Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical /Dental Practitioner including:

a.    High level interpersonal and communication skills.

b.    Demonstrated ability working within a multidisciplinary team.

c.    Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and evidence-based best practice.

d.    Demonstrated commitment to teaching and supervision

4.   Familiarity with research concepts and commitment to support basic, applied or clinical research within the Department.

5.   Commitment to teaching for Part 1 ANZCA examination.

6.   Administrative duties within Department of Anaesthesia including rosters

7.   Commitment to JMO well being

8.  Additional criteria such as involvement in research or special interest in relevant subspecialties such as obstetrics, simulation and education, perioperative medicine or bariatric surgery would be an advantage.
