Successful applicants will provide both inpatient and outpatient services at Westmead Hospital in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine, and will be expected to participate in the on-call roster. The successful applicant will undertake and supervise clinical activity in the Respiratory Wards and Respiratory Comprehensive Care Centre. In addition, the successful applicant will supervise the activity and workloads for the inpatient RMO teams, and help to manage the overall level of inpatient clinical activity in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine. There is a possibility for further training in Sleep Medicine or Interventional Bronchoscopy for suitable applicants.

The position will be for a period of 12 months commencing on 2 February 2026
Respiratory and Sleep Medicine involves treatment of adult patients with illness that affects their respiratory function and secondary prevention once a patient has been diagnosed with respiratory disease.
Services are provided through inpatient care at Westmead Hospital, respiratory NIV and sleep disorders service, respiratory function laboratory, interventional bronchoscopy, ambulatory clinics including general respiratory, lung nodule, lung cancer, respiratory failure, TB, COPD, cystic fibrosis, ILD, pulmonary hypertension, severe asthma, and ambulatory pulmonary rehabilitation programs (RACS and Integrated Care). Ambulatory services comprise a significant proportion of activity, including home oxygen and ventilation services through ENABLE and RACS. Preventive services include promotion of smoking reduction and TB screening.
Respiratory and Sleep Medicine also takes clinical management responsibility for inpatient acute NIV services through the Respiratory Close Observation Unit at Westmead Hospital.
Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Staff Specialists (State) Award.
Essential Requirements:
1. Possess or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or equivalent as provided for in the Staff Specialists (State) Award/. Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency.
2. Demonstrated clinical skills in flexible bronchoscopy and pleural procedures. Demonstrated clinical skills in management of patients with acute and chronic Respiratory Failure.
3. Research and Teaching interests in areas aligned with the Department’s interests (eg physician trainee education and supervision programs, sleep, respiratory failure, lung cancer, pulmonary embolism, interventional bronchoscopy, COPD or cystic fibrosis)
Selection Criteria:
1. Possess or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or equivalent as provided for in the Staff Specialists (State) Award/. Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency.
2. Sound clinical knowledge in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine, and Respiratory Procedures as demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position, including procedural skills in bronchoscopy and pleural procedures, and management of patients with acute and chronic Respiratory Failure.
3. Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical /Dental Practitioner including:
· Proven ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team.
· Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues.
· Excellent organisational, supervision and collaboration skills with demonstrated ability to build respectful relationships.
· Maintaining and developing knowledge, skills and professional performance to the level required for contemporary practice.
· Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and translation of research into practice to improve patient safety and quality.
