Aboriginal Cultural Programs Specialist

This is an Identified role for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal and being accepted in the community as such. An applicant's race is a genuine occupational qualification for this role and is authorised under Section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW. Applicants must demonstrate Aboriginality in addition to addressing the selection criteria.

Lead change. Strengthen culture. Build trust.

At Central Coast Local Health District (CCLHD), our purpose is clear: Trusted care. Better health for everyone. A key priority for us is building trust and delivering more culturally safe and responsive care for Aboriginal patients and families on the Central Coast. That starts with strong cultural leadership — and that's where you come in.

We’re looking for a proud and passionate Aboriginal professional to step into the role of Aboriginal Cultural Programs Specialist. Based in our growing Aboriginal Workforce Development Unit, this role will drive transformative cultural capability initiatives across the district.

This is more than just an education role — this is your opportunity to shape how we listen, learn, and lead with culture at the heart of everything we do.

About the Role

You’ll be the key driver of the Respecting the Difference cultural training program and other Aboriginal-specific education initiatives designed to lift cultural understanding and create safer, more responsive healthcare spaces for Aboriginal people across our services.

This role sits at the intersection of community, culture, and system change, where your leadership will:

  • Design, deliver and facilitate cultural learning that strengthens cultural safety at every level of our organisation
  • Build strong, respectful relationships with Aboriginal communities, organisations and stakeholders
  • Promote truth-telling, connection and healing through meaningful, two-way education
  • Shape strategy through planning, evaluation and continuous improvement
  • Advocate and guide staff to walk alongside community and provide care that is safe, respectful and culturally responsive

You’ll be a cultural ambassador within our health district - influencing how we work, how we lead, and how we show up for our Aboriginal community.

For more information about this role, please view the Position Description.

About You

You’re a proud Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, well connected to community, with strong cultural knowledge and values and a passion for change.

You bring experience in delivering or facilitating cultural education and know how to connect with people at all levels. You’re not afraid to challenge thinking - but you always lead with respect, compassion and strength.

Your leadership is grounded in cultural integrity and your voice carries the lived experience that our workforce needs to hear.

You’ll thrive in this role if you’re someone who:

  • Believes deeply in the power of culturally safe and responsive healthcare for our community
  • Knows how to engage people on complex and sensitive topics
  • Has a strong vision for systemic change that centres Aboriginal people

Why This Role Matters

This role directly contributes to CCLHD’s Aboriginal health and workforce objectives, where:

  • Our Aboriginal health workforce is growing and feels supported
  • First and ongoing contacts with Aboriginal people are culturally safe and appropriate.
  • Everyone understands their role and responsibility in improving health outcomes for Aboriginal community members
  • We respond to community needs using local knowledge and connections through partnerships with the Aboriginal community, organisations and our Aboriginal workforce

Your work will help embed long-term, sustainable cultural change — improving care, building trust and creating a health system that respects and reflects the needs of Aboriginal people and communities.
