The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at The Children's Hospital at Westmead (CHW) are seeking a temporary 1.0 FTE (40 hours per week) Staff Specialist to join their team to commence ASAP. This is a temporary 2 year Staff Specialist contract within PICU at CHW. At the end of the 2 year appointment, the successful applicant may potentially convert to a permanent Staff Specialist. 

What you'll be doing
The PICU staff specialist ensures the delivery of excellent clinical care for critically ill children and their families. 

Expectations of the role include commitment to excellence in interdisciplinary care, quality improvement, education and research within the department as well as the hospital and wider paediatric intensive care community in NSW, Australia and internationally.

Provide excellent clinical services to children and their families as part of a multi-disciplinary team. 

Participate in review and improvement activities, as well as training and education of staff. 

Abide by the hospital code of conduct and participate in annual performance reviews for clinical services in accordance with the Staff Specialist (State) Award.

Applicants must have completed the COVID-19 vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW.

ASARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) 2 primary doses are required for Category A positions (refer to NSW Policy Directive PD2023_022 Occupational Assessment Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases).

In addition, all Category A workers and new recruits are required to receive one dose of the seasonal influenza vaccine annually to be considered compliant.

Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate.

Please note: To be eligible for permanent appointment to a position in NSW Health, you must have an Australian citizenship or permanent Australian residency.

  1. Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine, and/or overseas trained specialist pathways via the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) or equivalent.
  2. Training and recent experience in paediatric cardiac intensive care and ECLS.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and provide leadership of a team.
  4. Demonstrated effective clinical communication through the use of information technology and written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
  5. Demonstrated commitment to teaching, continuing education and training, and quality improvement.
  6. Desirable criteria - demonstrated interest/progression towards developing expertise in any of the following areas: 1. Clinical information systems and technology in ICU 2. Medical research 3. Neuro critical care 4. Education and wellbeing
  7. Availability to participate in an on-call roster and to respond on site within a reasonable time.
