The Mental Health Services of NSLHD comprise 7 distinct services: HKMHS, North Shore Ryde MHS, Northern Beaches MHS, Macquarie Hospital, NSLHD CYMHS and NS Drug and Alcohol Services.
HKMHS is a comprehensive MHS serving the shires of Hornsby & Ku-ring-gai (approximate catchment population of 265,000) providing a range of services including Acute In-patient Care, Acute Community Care, Psychiatric Emergency Care, Consultation Liaison Services, Aged Care Psychiatry Services, Rehabilitation, Residential Services, Mental Health Intensive Inpatient Care and Early Psychosis Services.
A 12 bed Child & Youth Unit is co-located in the facility as well as Community CYMHS Services. A Mental Health Intensive Care Unit is adjacent to the adult in-patient unit. To note the MHSs on the HKH Campus are expanding rapidly and a diverse range of services are provided in a comprehensive integrated framework.
The incumbent will be primarily responsible for the care of an allocated number of consumers in the 35 bed inpatient unit. Additional community responsibility may be allocated in discussion with the Clinical Director/ Unit Director for the service.
The provision of out-patient services, particularly for post-discharge follow up & related continuity of care matters is also required, as directed by the Clinical Director. The incumbent will work alongside colleagues in the unit with several adult teams and one OPMHS team.
A critical role of the incumbent is to develop, foster and maintain consultative and collaborative relationships with all key stakeholders to ensure optimal implementation of the mental health resources and provision of high quality, evidence based clinical care.
The incumbent reports professionally, operationally and clinically to the AMHU Unit Director, and the Clinical Director HKMHS for HKMHS site and sector matters. The incumbent reports administrative matters to the Service Director HKMHS.
The incumbent provides direct clinical management & treatment to the consumers, assisted by JMOs, in conjunction with other AMHU psychiatrists. The incumbent is required to build and maintain sound relationships with other clinicians at sector and LHD levels and may be required to participate in LHD Mental Health committees and projects as required by the position’s operational and clinical line managers. The incumbent is expected to participate and contribute to the weekly training and educational programs for psychiatrists and trainees within the campus.
The incumbent assists the Clinical Director in the development and maintenance of clinical practices and standards within the inpatient and community services.
Selection Criteria
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia. Applicants must have Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist Psychiatrist
and/or overseas trained substantial specialist pathways. Applicants expecting to be awarded their FRANZCP within 3 months may be considered. - Consistently demonstrates behaviours that reinforce the CORE Values of our Organisation; Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment. - Experience and proven performance as a Staff Specialist in acute adult psychiatry and acute mental health care systems
- Proven ability to work with a multidisciplinary framework team across hospital and community settings
- Understanding of and commitment to Local Health District, State and National Mental Health priorities and plans
- Expert knowledge and proven experience in working with the NSW Mental Health Act 2007
- Experience in teaching Psychiatry to Medical, Nursing and Allied Health students, Psychiatry trainees and others as required
- Experience in clinical practice improvement/quality improvement and experience or willingness to participate in clinical research, Consumer Safety and Learning Organisation principles
