Purpose of the Position
The position is part of the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Mental Health Service (HKMHS) which provides recovery orientated mental health care to consumers, carers and families.
HKMHS is a comprehensive mental health service serving the shires of Hornsby and Ku-ring-gai. A range of services are provided by the HKMHS including acute inpatient care, acute community care, psychiatric emergency care, consultation liaison services, older persons mental health, rehabilitation, assertive outreach services, mental health intensive inpatient care and early psychosis intervention services.
The Staff Specialist will be primarily located in the Acute Care Team, but may also include all other HKMHS Community Teams. The provision of outpatient services, particularly for post –discharge follow up and related continuity of care matters is required, in consultation with the Clinical Director.
The Staff Specialist is expected to work in other areas of the Service if required and as directed by the HKMHS Clinical Director.
A critical role of the incumbent is to develop, foster and maintain consultative and collaborative relationships with all key stakeholders to ensure optimal implementation of the mental health resources.

Selection Criteria

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia. Applicants must have Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist Psychiatrist and/or overseas trained substantial specialist pathways. Applicants expecting to be awarded their FRANZCP within 3 months may be considered.
  2. Consistently demonstrates behaviours that reinforce the CORE Values of our organisation; Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment. Demonstrates these behaviours with all stakeholders; colleagues, direct reports, as well as our patients and consumers, and those that care for them.
  3. Demonstrated excellent Interpersonal and Communication skills.
  4. Proven ability to work with a multidisciplinary framework team across hospital and community settings.
  5. Understanding of and commitment to Local Health District, State and National Mental Health priorities and plans.
  6. Expert knowledge and proven experience in working with the NSW Mental Health Act 2007.
  7. Experience in teaching psychiatry to medical, nursing and allied health students, psychiatry trainees and others as required.
  8. Experience in clinical practice improvement/quality improvement and experience or willingness to participate in clinical research.
