Purpose of position:

The AOD Staff Specialist provides clinical leadership and expertise across a range of substance use disorders including assessment, opioid treatment, pharmacotherapy, withdrawal management, substance use in pregnancy and parenting, referral and consultation to a multidisciplinary team of AOD clinicians. 

The Staff Specialist will provide opioid treatment services to Queanbeyan and Yass, addiction medicine clinics in Cooma and Goulburn, consultation and support to AOD inpatients in Queanbeyan Hospital as required, supervision of Nurse Practitioners/Transitional Nurse Practitioners and support to research projects as appropriate. 

Your Opportunity:

  • Provide safe and effective opioid agonist treatment
  • Work effectively within the multidisciplinary Alcohol and Other Drugs teams.
  • Provide best practice evidence based clinical services to achieve quality patient outcomes.
  • Utilise information systems to enable informed decision making and care planning.
  • Communicate effectively with staff and clinicians to ensure quality and continuity of care.
  • Actively participate in risk management and quality programs to improve organisational processes and own practices.
  • Comply with relevant legislation and regulations, NSW Ministry of Health policies and SNSWLHD procedures, and assist in meeting Activity Based Funding, Commonwealth and State targets.
  • Actively promotes and participates in patient safety and ongoing quality improvement programs.
  • Engages in practices that promote the best possible health


Selection Criteria:

  1. Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
  2. Demonstrated experience in opioid agonist treatment provision.
  3. Demonstrated high quality, contemporary approach to alcohol and other drug treatments.
  4. Demonstrated effective clinical communication through the use of information technology and written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
  5. Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and quality improvement.
  6. Valid unrestricted drivers’ licence for use in NSW/Australia and willingness to travel in the course of employment.


Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Specific Diseases

This is a Category ‘A’ position, please read and understand NSW Health policy directive PD2024_015. All new employees must agree to comply with the requirements outlined in this policy. OASV requirements also include proof of vaccination against influenza and is compulsory for NSW Staff that enter any Residential Aged Care Facility (RACF) or who work in NSW Health owned and operated RACFs.
