We are seeking a motivated Paediatric Provisional Fellow to join our team as part of the Coastal Network, Southern NSW LHD. This is an STP-funded training position and is accredited with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (Paediatrics & Child Health) for Advanced Training in Rural Paediatric Medicine (6 months), and Community/Developmental Paediatric Medicine (6 months).

Where you’ll be working

This position is based at South East Regional Hospital located in the Sapphire Coast region of New South Wales. This stunning coastal NSW region is situated halfway between Melbourne and Sydney; a short 1-hour flight from either Melbourne or Sydney or a 2 ½ hour drive from Canberra. The area is comprised of 75% national parks with spectacular coastline, turquoise crystal-clear water, pristine wilderness and more than 100 unspoilt beaches. It provides a stunning outdoor lifestyle for those interested in surfing, skiing, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, fishing, cycling, bush-walking or other outdoor adventures.

Your Opportunity:

This is an exciting opportunity to join a team of paediatricians as our paediatric provisional fellow. We are a friendly, innovative and exciting team who are motivated and interested in rural and complex paediatric medicine. We place a strong emphasis in providing an exceptional standard of service to our under-resourced and vulnerable populations. We have a strong focus on education and service development.

The work includes acute and emergency paediatrics, neonatal resuscitation and special care nursery management and outpatient clinics. We have a 6-bed plus 4-short stay bed Level 4 Paediatric Unit that services the Eurobodalla and Bega Valley regions. We support an experienced Emergency Department with around 4000 paediatric emergency presentations per year. We are also the receiving paediatric hospital for surrounding hospitals in Eurobodalla and Bega Valley which totals another 4000 paediatric emergency presentations per year. We provide a Level 3 maternity service and Level 2 “plus” neonatal service that delivers around 300 babies per annum. We also have a varied outpatient caseload with challenging and interesting paediatric medicine and developmental/behavioural medicine. We provide regular specialist outpatient clinics at South East Regional Hospital and through outreach clinics in Eden, Cooma, Narooma and Eurobodalla.  

We have a strong emphasis on education and training and there are teaching opportunities across undergraduate, pre-vocational and vocational training, and GP specialist training levels.  We also place strong emphasis on education and support to the surrounding hospitals of our region. We have strong links with the Australian National University Graduate Medical School including placement of rural medical students in the Paediatric ward.

The successful candidate will provide: paediatric services across all of the settings described above; support and supervision of Junior Medical staff and medical students; and leadership in teaching and training for junior medical staff, medical students and nursing staff. The candidate will have the opportunity to be ‘first on call’, and opportunities for research, service development and project leadership under the support and supervision of the paediatric senior staff.

The position is accredited with the RACP for Paediatric Specialist training. The trainee will meet requirements for Rural General Paediatrics with no neonatal component and Community/Developmental Paediatrics as part of a 12 month general Paediatric term.

Selection Criteria:

  1. MBBS or equivalent, current registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia. Current licence to drive in NSW.
  2. Registered with the RACP as an advanced trainee or equivalent. Those registered with the RACP must have successfully completed the written and clinical components of the FRACP examination or equivalent and preferably completed a minimum of 6 months as an advanced trainee with the RACP or equivalent at commencement of Fellowship. This position is applicable for peer review via the OTP Pathway.
  3. Minimum 12 months general paediatric experience. Desirable experience includes experience in paediatric and neonatal acute and critical care, and experience in paediatric developmental / behavioural medicine.
  4. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
  5. Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with other health professionals.
  6. Ongoing commitment to further education and professional development and demonstrated ability to teach, with a willingness to participate in the teaching of medical students, junior medical staff, and other clinical staff.
  7. Understanding of research methodology or research experience and a willingness to undertake a research proposal.
  8. Demonstrated contribution to the development of hospital services e.g. participation in paediatric junior staff matters, participation in hospital committees, project leadership.

This is a Category ‘A’ position, please read and understand NSW Health policy directive PD2024_015. All new employees must agree to comply with the requirements outlined in this policy. OASV requirements also include proof of vaccination against influenza and is compulsory for NSW Staff that enter any Residential Aged Care Facility (RACF) or who work in NSW Health owned and operated RACFs.
