The Role
The Service Director Aboriginal Mental Health works in partnership with the Director Aboriginal Health, the General Manager Forensic Mental Health, and the NSW Clinical Director Forensic Mental Health to deliver culturally responsive services to improve the recovery and safety of Aboriginal patients in contact with NSW Forensic Mental Health Services.
This position will be strategically and professionally responsible for supporting and enabling Aboriginal Mental Health Clinical Leads, Aboriginal Mental Health Care Navigators, Aboriginal Mental Health Clinicians, Djirruwang Training Program (and other) trainees, and Aboriginal Mental Health Peer Workers to deliver effective, culturally safe services. The position will also support the development of Aboriginal Mental Health models of care across community, court, secure-inpatient and custodial settings to help close the gap in health outcomes for Aboriginal people; support the strategic implementation of the NSW Aboriginal Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy, Justice Health NSW’s Strategic Plan and the NSW Forensic Mental Health Services Strategic Plan; strengthen the Aboriginal Mental Health Workforce; and assist in the development of partnerships that support patients to progress in their recovery, reconnect with culture and community.
The position requires an experienced, transformative, senior manager with mental health experience and demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal Mental Health service delivery and workforce development.
Essential Requirements
- Must be a person of Aboriginal descent who has a demonstrated ability to work with and earn the trust and respect of Aboriginal people, communities and organisations.
- Have qualifications and demonstrated experience in mental health care.
- Relevant qualifications in health management or equivalent work experience in mental health as a clinician, or a combination of both study and work experience in the above fields.

Our Location and services
The Justice Health Administration Centre (JHAC) is located at 1300 Anzac Parade, Malabar
The JHAC is located immediately outside the Long Bay Correctional Complex, about 3km south of Maroubra on Anzac Parade and is next door to the main entrance of the Forensic Hospital. Entrance to JHAC is via the ramp to the left of the building.
Visitor parking is available outside JHAC. There is also free, non-metered parking available on Anzac Parade and in the local area. The nearest railway station is Central Railway Station. There are bus stops nearby, with the 390x and 392 routes taking passengers from and towards central Sydney and connecting public transport options.
The Justice Health Olympic Park (JHOP) office is located at 10 Herb Elliot Avenue, Sydney Olympic Park and Justice Health staff are able to access discounted parking at $5 a day. Public transport is readily available including buses, trains, and ferries. Easy road access is provided via the M4 and Parramatta Road via Homebush Bay Drive. 35 km of bicycle paths surround the site and both bicycle storage and shower amenities are available inside.

- Must be a person of Aboriginal descent who has a demonstrated ability to work with and earn the trust and respect of Aboriginal people, communities and organisations. This includes the ability to consult and negotiate with senior stakeholder representatives on complex issues of a sensitive nature
- Proven management experience at a senior level within the area of aboriginal mental health and demonstrated excellent strategic planning, policy and service development, and financial management skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal mental health care practices and principles
- Demonstrated experience developing complex correspondence, including ministerial briefs, business cases, models of care, strategic plans and policy.
- Proven innovative problem-solving skills and experience in the management and resolution of workforce matters and/or industrial relations matters in complex health environments
- Proven high level interpersonal, negotiation and influencing skills demonstrating the ability to motivate and engage a multi-disciplinary teams to achieve the best outcomes for Aboriginal patients.
