The vision for nursing and midwifery at The Sutherland Hospital is to: Build a united team that provides compassionate care to our community through transformational, supportive and holistic nursing and midwifery.
Where you'll be working:
Barkala is a secure ward with a total of 23 beds catering for acutely unwell medical aged patients. Care includes management of acute delirium, acute conditions on the background of chronic illnesses and in some cases, palliative care. Barkala also encompasses The Aged Care Assessment Unit (ACAU) which is a 9 bed unit (with 8 telemetry monitors). Patients who are admitted to ACAU have a rapid comprehensive workup with early interventions that may facilitate discharge back home where appropriate. ACAU works under a Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) model of care, which has a 48 hour length of stay. This model of care has dramatically reduced the length of stay of older people with in the Emergency Department, which has demonstrated to improve patient outcomes in this patient cohort.

Your new role:
The purpose of the Nursing/Midwifery Unit Manager of Barkala is to:
- lead, direct and co-ordinate patient or client care;
- ensure the practice of nursing and/or midwifery is safe and efficient, maintaining standards of care through continual quality improvement initiatives.
- lead and co-ordinate the nursing/midwifery and multi-disciplinary care team at the ward or unit level, and
- monitor and manage the business and management functions and processes of the ward or unit
As the leader of the unit, the NUM/MUM will demonstrate her/his capability through attitude, skills, behaviour and attributes, namely:
- broad nursing/midwifery experience and knowledge;
- understanding and acceptance that patients are the central focus of service delivery;
- professional integrity;
- ethical conduct;
- accountability;
- advocacy;
- enabling others;
- cultivation of collaborative relationships and effective team work;
- commitment to advancing the profession of nursing/midwifery and care provision

For Registered Nurses – Opportunity to obtain personal regrade to Clinical Nurse Specialist Grade 1 status where relevant
Selection Criteria:
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse/Midwife with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia
- Relevant management tertiary qualification or equivalent work experience, or a combination of study and work experience with a demonstrated commitment to professional development
- A demonstrated knowledge and experience in the management and delivery of health care services
- Proven ability in innovative clinical service delivery, harm minimisation and practice development
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills that demonstrate the ability to engage, enable and manage teams
- Proven ability to create and maintain a positive workplace culture and articulate and achieve a vision for nursing services.
- Recent clinical experience in an acute care setting.
