About Your Role

The endorsed Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse educated and authorised to function autonomously and collaboratively in an advanced and extended clinical role. The NP role includes assessment and management of clients using nursing knowledge and skills and may include, but is not limited, to the direct referral of consumer’s to other health care professionals, prescribing medications and ordering diagnostic investigations. The NP role is grounded in the nursing profession's values, knowledge, theories and practise and provides innovative and flexible health care delivery that complements other health care providers. The scope of practice of the nurse practitioner is determined by the context in which the nurse practitioner is authorised to practice. 

The MHECS NP provides clinically focused quality care for people presenting to the emergency departments in MLHD with complex mental health concerns in an advanced and extended role. The NP is responsible for coordinating and delivering safe, person centred comprehensive emergency mental health consultations, assessments and support services to persons (including their family, and/or carers) who are experiencing complex acute mental health crisis. The NP promotes the principles of trauma informed care and recovery, models and participates in the organisation's commitment to consumers and carers as partners in care. 

A NP for will have extensive experience in the management of chronic mental health patients in the rural setting. The NP will conduct comprehensive mental health assessments, and in conjunction with the consumer and/or family, develop care plans specific to the consumer’s complex needs. These care plans will be evidence based and will address psychosocial and lifestyle issues as well as physical problems. The NP will work in collaboration with Psychiatrists, General Practitioners and Medical Staff.  They will provide expert advice and guidance regarding the more complex consumer’s for Registered Nurses. 

The NP ensures the MLHD ED staff have prompt access to support and specialist mental health advice, guiding ED staff in managing mental health consumers’ risk, medications and plans for ongoing care, including transfer of care. The NP provides leadership that facilitates ongoing development of clinical practice and acts as a role model and an expert clinician in the clinical setting.
