This position will lead the NCIRS National Indigenous Immunisation team, consulting with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health sector and working with key national, state/territory and local stakeholders to increase Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander immunisation uptake. The focus includes the community-controlled sector, other service providers and immunisation program managers, aiming to ensure effective vaccination policy development and program delivery. The position also works across all NCIRS program areas to drive an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander immunisation focus.

The position is temporary contract until 30 June 2025. Our team is located at Westmead with flexible and hybrid working arrangements available. Part-time can be considered for the right candidate.

 

About you:

  • Demonstrate a cultural and community connection, understanding of the issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's health, and the ability to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples effectively.
  • Extensive experience in Indigenous Health, with demonstrated knowledge of immunisation and vaccine-preventable diseases in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

About NCIRS

NCIRS is the leading organisation in Australia in immunisation and vaccines that provides expert advice to support evidence-informed immunisation policy and guideline development, evaluation of immunisation programs, particularly the National Immunisation Program, and the monitoring of vaccine-preventable diseases, vaccine coverage and factors impacting uptake, and vaccine safety. NCIRS has national and international recognition in this arena and has a growing program of international work, focused on providing technical support for immunisation system strengthening to countries in the Indo-Pacific region. 

  

NCIRS is a collaborative team of experts in public health, biostatistics, infectious diseases, paediatrics, internal medicine, epidemiology, communication, social science and quantitative and qualitative research and survey methods. www.ncirs.org.au 

  

The Centre is based within the Division of Research of the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network, Westmead Campus, NSW, Australia, but has an all-age research remit and is affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health and the Sydney Institute for Infectious Diseases (Sydney ID) at the University of Sydney. NCIRS is funded primarily by the Australian Government and NSW Government, as well as via grants from WHO, Gavi, and research granting bodies.


Please note that throughout the recruitment process you will be assessed with the following:

  1. Masters level qualification in public health or related field, or equivalent work experience in area/s directly relevant to the duties of the position, or a combination of study and work experience.
  2. Demonstrated cultural and community connection with the understanding of the issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's health and the ability to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples effectively.
  3. Extensive experience in Indigenous Health, with demonstrated knowledge of immunisation and vaccine-preventable diseases in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  4. Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with organisations in health or related sectors to promote initiatives or programs with an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander focus.
  5. Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams to complete public health projects in an effective and timely manner.
  6. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  7. Experience in the use of relevant computer software packages including Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint and Word).
  8. Aboriginality is a genuine occupational qualification for the above position and is authorised under Section 14D of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977

As part of your application please address the following targeted questions:

  1. Describe a situation where you had to coordinate with multiple stakeholders, including Indigenous communities or organisations, to develop or improve health policies or programs. How did you ensure that the perspectives and knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples were incorporated into your work? 
  2. Reflecting on your previous roles, could you discuss a scenario where you had to advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health initiatives, either within your organisation or at a national/state level? How did you navigate these advocacy efforts, and what was the outcome? Additionally, how did you foster collaboration between various research organisations, government departments, and community-controlled health organisations?

All NSW Health workers are required to have completed a primary course (2 doses) of a COVID-19 vaccine which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA). New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate (IM011 immunisation medical exemption form) certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW.​

Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.
