About Your Role

The primary purpose of the Clinical Nurse Consultant Grade 3 – Violence, Abuse and Neglect (CNC 3– VAN) is to provide advanced clinical leadership and consultancy, research, education and service planning for both the MLHD Sexual Assault Service and the wider field of medical and forensic responses to violence, abuse and neglect (VAN). The CNC 3 Clinical Coordinator will provide leadership and primary responsibility for formalised ongoing clinical supervision processes, review clinical practice for a small team of medical and nursing staff.  

The CNC – VAN will employ expert nursing knowledge, experience and skills to deliver integrated medical and forensic responses and health care (within scope of practice) to people who have experienced violence, abuse and neglect). This includes providing integrated crisis responses, non-acute clinical care, and follow up medical care and health care navigation. It also includes providing expert clinical consultancy and developing significant educational resources for clients, colleagues and stakeholders; holding primary responsibility for ongoing clinical supervision processes for CNC peers; and undertaking ongoing analyses of current practice and the impact of new directions on the MLHD Sexual Assault Service. 

The CNC – VAN holds an important strategic role at a service level. They are responsible for initiating, developing, implementing and evaluating strategic changes and annual plans for the service, and developing specialist clinical education for the local health district.

The CNC – VAN will be qualified as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner and will have expertise in providing high quality, integrated medical and forensic responses to sexual assault as part of VAN Service  models of care outlined in the 
Integrated Prevention and Response to Violence, Abuse and Neglect Framework and other relevant NSW Health policy directives (e.g. Responding to Sexual Assault (adult and child) Policy and Procedures ). The CNC – VAN will provide nursing leadership in the development and implementation of integrated medical and forensic care for other cohorts, in line with Violence, Abuse and Neglect system reforms. This includes service provision for victims-survivors of domestic family violence; and exploring expansion of scope of practice to provide responses to children aged 13 years and younger who have experienced sexual assault and other forms of child abuse and neglect.

The CNC – VAN also provides clinical and strategic leadership and education for the field of medical and forensic responses to violence, abuse and neglect. This includes providing leadership in state and national specialist clinical groups; initiating and disseminating both service-level and large-scale collaborative academic research; participating in post-graduate education and providing significant contributions to the direction of nursing education.
