About the opportunity

A vacancy exists for an enthusiastic and experienced Technical Officer in the Histology section of the NSW Health Pathology Anatomical Pathology Laboratory, at Liverpool Hospital. This laboratory provides a full Anatomical Pathology service to several hospitals within the South West Sydney Local Health District including Liverpool, Fairfield, Campbelltown, Bankstown, Camden and Bowral hospitals.

This position is key to the continued provision of our Anatomical pathology services, and as such will required to work within a rotating roster with other scientific/technical staff. Duties include specimen processing (as required), embedding, microtomy, endoscopy transfers, frozen sections/renal bxs, staining/special stains and potential non-complex cut up and rotational duties for IHC. Other laboratory duties including preparation of materials and the maintenance of equipment in line with established laboratory processes, procedures and protocols will also be undertaken.

You will be working in the Histology section of the Anatomical Pathology Department located at the Liverpool Hospital Campus. The Department is a very busy and large multicultural Department that provides a full range of Histology testing.

What you'll be doing

Perform a range of laboratory investigations and tests (manual and automated) and technical tasks by applying established methods and procedures, as directed. Undertake other laboratory duties including preparation of materials and the maintenance of equipment in line with established laboratory processes, procedures and protocols.

  1. Minimum qualification of Diploma in Laboratory Technology or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution with subjects relevant to pathology or medical laboratory operations
  2. Willingness to work within a rotating roster 24/7 as well as an on call roster with other Scientific and Technical staff; Duties include specimen processing, assisting in surgical cut up (as required), embedding, microtomy, staining/ special staining, frozen sections/ renal bx, endoscopy transfers, potentially non-complex cut up and backfill coverage of IHC.
  3. Ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner and to manage competing priorities to meet deadlines
  4. Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment whilst working autonomously to deliver results within specified timeframes set to meet client expectations
  5. Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers and patients as well as clinical laboratory staff
  6. Display initiative, problem solving and analytical skills including an ability to apply established principles in a pathology laboratory and investigate and resolve general and complex issues within the laboratory environment
  7. Commitment to the principles of quality management and continuous quality improvement and to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities
  8. Current NSW Driver's License
