What you'll be doing

The AYAH(Adolescent and Young Adult Hospice)  Grief Counsellor position is responsible for driving the operationalisation of a public health model of care for bereavement services at the AYAH. The primary purpose of the position is to coordinate a comprehensive bereavement service for all family members of patient’s who access the AYAH service. This role encompasses bereavement support for patient’s family members who have accessed the Mona Vale Hospital (MVH) Palliative Care Unit, when requested.  

The Grief Counsellor will provide direct support to family members and carers of patients who have accessed the AYAH. This role will provide education to multi-disciplinary staff in conjunction with the AYAH Social Worker(SW). The role will engage/partner with community stakeholders in establishing a bereavement community of practice. This role will implement a range of initiatives focusing on service development, referral pathways, capacity building and coordination of services for the AYAH unit.

People of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background encouraged to apply.
Candidates will need to meet the following criteria:

  1. Social Worker eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers with demonstrated experience as level 2 or equivalent.
  2. Experience as a counselling clinician in bereavement, palliative care or end of life contexts and specialist knowledge of bereavement, loss and grief processes. Experience in working with adolescents and young adults.
  3. Proven ability to work independently, with minimal supervision and as a collaborative member of a multi-disciplinary team.
  4. Capacity to provide education and training to health professionals in the areas of grief, loss and bereavement and capacity to provide clinical supervision to social workers and social work students.
