The Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC 1) Clinical Emergency Response System (CERS)/Clinical Support is a Registered Nurse who provides after hours expert client centred practice and support within the facility. This clinical practice, support, guidance and advice is provided to patients and carers, nursing staff and medical officers.

The CNC1 CERS/Clinical Support will undertake clinical patient assessments and contribute towards clinical investigations and provide direction, guidance and feedback in relation to the care and overall management of deteriorating, complex, acute medical and surgical conditions. The focus of the role is to work with staff in the clinical areas and provide leadership in evidence based care. 

The CNC1 CERS/Clinical Support provides clinical support to clinicians who are caring for deteriorating, complex, acute medical and surgical conditions after-hours and follow up ‘at risk’ patients transferred to the wards from the Emergency Department or Critical Care Medicine. Support would also be provided to the After Hours Nurse Manager in the management of REACH calls, medical staff for cannulation and venepuncture and nursing staff with ward support for senior clinical nursing duties.

The CNC1 is a Registered Nurse appointed as such to a position approved by the Health Service, who has at least 5 years full time equivalent post registration experience, and in addition who has approved post registration nursing/midwifery qualifications relevant to the field in which he/she is appointed to or such other qualifications or experience deemed appropriate by the Health Service.

Selection Criteria:
1. Current unrestricted Authority to Practice as a Registered Nurse/Midwife, Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
2. Minimum five years full time equivalent post qualification experience, and post graduate qualifications relevant to the field of practice.
3. Proven clinical leadership skills and an ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary framework with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in nursing practice.
4. Demonstrated effective communication and inter-personal skills across a variety of mediums and an understanding of the practice development framework.
5. Proven ability to implement changes and develop direction in clinical practice by the utilisation of evidence based research.
6. Demonstrated skills in strategic and clinical service planning including an understanding of organisational behaviour, change management and cultural change processes.
7. Demonstrated skills in clinical teaching, competency in the use of contemporary information systems and experience in the development of specialty education programs.
8. Demonstrated clinical expertise in client-centred consultancy with the ability to work independently.
