What you'll be doing
The successful applicant will be working as a Paediatrics and Neonatal Career Medical Officer (CMO) in the Department of Paediatrics and Neonatology at Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospitals (BMDH). They will be exposed to all aspects of Paediatrics and Neonatology at the level of role delineation (i.e., Metropolitan Paediatrics and Nursery Level 4) and is able to competently assess children presenting to the Emergency Department and make appropriate provisional diagnoses and management plans and to determine disposition. They will be expected to manage patients independently with supervision from consultants.

The primary purpose of the role is to provide effective clinical management of paediatric and neonatal patients, which includes assessment, investigation, performance of necessary procedures and formulation of a management plan. The CMO is the key person who works closely with all members of a multi-disciplinary team and deals with matters of an urgent or sensitive nature, whilst exercising discretion, sensitivity and maintaining confidentiality.
 
The CMO is also expected to be proficient at both neonatal and paediatric resuscitation. They will be exposed to a broad range of developmental and behavioural problems, and they are expected to undertake the assessments as part of the multidisciplinary teams and independently where required. They will be expected to assess children at risk and complete a PANOC assessment when required. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.
 
The CMO is expected to supervise and educate junior medical staff and students. They will participate in ongoing professional development, system improvement activities and research.


  1. Demonstrated ability to work independently under consultant supervision, in a complex clinical environment particularly in the domains of clinical judgment and communication.
  2. Excellent procedural skills including venepuncture, cannulation, lumbar puncture, urinary catheter insertion or supra-pubic aspirate collection; neonatal chest drain insertion, and umbilical lines insertion.
  3. Demonstrated advanced neonatal and paediatric resuscitation skills. Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to changing situations in a busy and unpredictable clinical environment.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and as part of a multidisciplinary team, including with internal and external key persons or services.
  5. Demonstrated advanced verbal and written communication skills in the clinical context; this includes ensuring effective, timely and accurate discharge planning for patients.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to education of junior staff and the broader healthcare team and a commitment to the supervision of junior medical officers and students.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development and ongoing medical education and research.
  8. Demonstrated commitment to patient safety, risk management and quality improvement
