An exciting opportunity has become available for a motivated Aboriginal Social and Emotional Wellbeing Peer Worker/Trainee to work within a positive and enthusiastic Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Service within Mental Health Drug and Alcohol (MHDA) service.

Remuneration: Health Education Officer Graduate $1,369.66 - $2,188.38 per week /  Non Graduate $1,197.54 - $1,731.74 per week

What you'll be doing

The Aboriginal Social and Emotional Wellbeing Peer Worker/Trainee (herein referred to as Peer Worker) will draw upon their lived experience of social and emotional wellbeing issues to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers accessing NSLHD Emergency Department, Inpatient and Community MHDA Services to support the delivery of culturally safe services. The Peer Worker will work closely alongside multidisciplinary teams to support Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander consumers in developing hope, autonomy and purpose and support engagement with family and community; culture, spirituality, and identity, with Country; basic needs; work, roles, and responsibilities; education; physical health; and mental health.

People of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background are encouraged to apply.

Candidates will need to meet the following criteria:

  1. Consistently demonstrates behaviours that reinforce the CORE Values of our organisation; Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment. Demonstrates these behaviours with all stakeholders; colleagues, direct reports, as well as our patients and consumers, and those that care for them
  2. To be a person of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under Section 14(d) of the Anti-discrimination Act 1977.
  3. Lived experience of social and emotional wellbeing challenges and the ability and willingness to draw on your own personal recovery experience to support others individually and/or in groups in a safe and effective way.
  4. Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work or willingness and commitment to complete Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work, or Djirruwang program, as negotiated with the manager.
  5. Understanding of the challenges that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers may experience in accessing mental health and/or drug and alcohol services and person-led social and emotional recovery principles.
  6. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective partnerships with a range of key stakeholders including team members, consumers, families and carers, GPs, community managed organisations.
  7. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team and actively contribute to clinical care planning processes in a team setting.
  8. Current NSW drivers licence.
