This position is based at Community Mental Health in Dean House located on the Tamworth Hospital Campus and will sit within the New England North West MHS Acute Care Team, which provides services to consumers who present with mental health issues. You will also provide group programs within the Tamworth Mental Health Inpatient Unit.

About the role:

As an Aboriginal Mental Health Peer Worker, you will have a lived experience of mental health services and personal recovery, and share experiential knowledge, skills and strategies for living with a mental illness to foster hope for recovery for consumers. You will also provide holistic and culturally sensitive person-centred support to consumers to achieve better outcomes and better access to health services. Your knowledge from your personal journey will be utilised to support consumers by providing individual consultations, education, and group interventions aimed at facilitating recovery principles of hope, choice and self-determination and social connectedness. You will also work alongside other members of the multi-disciplinary team, contributing to care planning and liaising with internal and external stakeholders to ensure best outcomes for consumers.

The successful candidate will be supported by the multidisciplinary team and Team Manager as well as other Peer Workers and the Peer Work Lead. You will be supported to develop an individualised development plan, including relevant ongoing education access to cultural supervision and specific clinical supervision. Cultural support will be provided by Yimamulinbinkaan Aboriginal Mental Health Service & Social Emotional Wellbeing team.

About you:
The successful candidate will have the ability to liaise, proactively engage and work collaboratively with vulnerable communities and relevant agencies in ensuring culturally responsive services and will have an understanding of and commitment to person-centred, consumer-led recovery principles. You will also have personal experience as a consumer of mental health services, and the ability to utilise your lived experience to support others with their own mental health recovery journey, whilst drawing on effective strategies to maintain wellness. Your high-level communication and interpersonal skills and ability to build strong professional relationships with key stakeholders will be essential to your success in this position.
