Where you'll be working
Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) is responsible for providing primary and secondary health care for people living in the Auburn, Blacktown, and The Hills Shire, Holroyd and Parramatta Local Government Areas (LGAs) and tertiary care to residents of the Greater Western Region. What you'll be doing
The Aboriginal Health Worker / Practitioner is part of the New Directions Mothers and Babies Program, which is funded by the Commonwealth Government. New Directions aims to contribute to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander early childhood health and development to ensure that children are healthy and ready for school. The program provides high quality, culturally sensitive child and family health services, based on primary health care principles, provided in partnership with Aboriginal people and communities.


The Aboriginal Health Worker is a key position in establishing trust and building relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients and community, and child and family health services in WSLHD.
 
The Aboriginal Health Worker / Practitioner will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and is a key position in establishing trust and building relationships between the Aboriginal community and WSLHD and is responsible for establishing effective local partnerships to address barriers and facilitate access to health services for Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander children and their families, and community.
 
The Aboriginal Health Worker is a non-clinical role. The Aboriginal Health Practitioner will provide a range of direct clinical services as defined by the Aboriginal Health Practitioner Scope of Practice and as demonstrated through competency assessment.

Essential Criteria:

Qualification: Aboriginal Health Worker: Holds or aspires to hold a Certificate III qualification in Aboriginal Primary Health Care or Aboriginal Family Health or other equivalent qualification. Aboriginal Health Practitioner: Hold a Certificate IV in Aboriginal Primary Health Care (Practice).
Registration: Aboriginal Health Practitioner: current authority to practice as an Aboriginal Health Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
Evidence of Diversity claim if applicable (state which category): Aboriginal and / Or Torres Strait Islander

Selection Criteria:

  1. This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Position. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal and being accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
  2. For an Aboriginal Health Worker: Holds or aspires to hold a Certificate III qualification in Aboriginal Primary Health Care or Aboriginal Family Health or other equivalent qualification in a health-related field relevant to the role. For an Aboriginal Health Practitioner holds a Certificate IV in Aboriginal Primary Health Care (Practice) and a current authority to practice as an Aboriginal Health Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  3. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures with established links to the local Aboriginal community in western Sydney.
  4. Demonstrated understanding of issues impacting on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and their families and ability and / or experience in providing social support, linkage to services, group work, community education, and health promotion with the Aboriginal community.
  5. Demonstrated ability to provide cultural brokerage with individuals, families and communities; cultural guidance for the other members of the team; and, facilitate respectful and culturally safe access for individuals, families and communities.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  7. Demonstrated good oral and written communication skills and computer skills.
  8. Current driver’s licence valid in NSW and willing to use for work purposes.
