This role provides a unique opportunity to join the Sexual Assault team in the PARVAN service in NSLHD. If you are the successful applicant you will be supporting children, teens and adults who have experienced sexual violence. You will be providing both crisis counselling following an assault as well as to working in an ongoing way to help people process their trauma and reconnect with self and others. Building links with Community and co-designing a culturally informed and responsive service is a priority which this role will align with.

What you'll be doing
Working within a strength based, family centred and culturally centred trauma informed approach, this role provides therapeutic and casework services to adults and children who have been sexually assaulted, and their non-offending family members and carers.  As part of a multidisciplinary health care team, this role provides quality services to clients of Northern Sydney Local Health District to meet their health and wellbeing needs.   
The role will partner with the Prevention and Response to Violence Abuse and Neglect (PARVAN) Services to develop a deeper level of awareness and understanding of how to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders who may engage with PARVAN specific services.  Working towards cultural responsiveness is a responsibility of all PARVAN staff.

Northern Sydney Local Health District’s PARVAN Service, in which the Sexual Assault Service (SAS) sits seeks to provide a culturally safe service for people from diverse backgrounds including Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander families and communities.

This role will have a professional development plan in place that will provide the opportunity for work-based development which allows for progression through the Award levels in accordance with the position holder’s skill acquisition.

Candidates will need to meet the following criteria:



  1. Must be Aboriginal descent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal and being accepted in the community as such under Section 14(d) of the NSW Anti Discrimination Act 1977 with knowledge and experience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.
  2. Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Aboriginal Qualification Pathway - Graduate Certificate in Human and Community Services (Interpersonal Trauma) or other relevant counselling degree deemed appropriate by the employer. Social Workers must have eligibility for the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) and post graduate experience at a minimum of level 2 or above. Psychologists must have a four year degree in psychology, being a three year degree with a fourth year honours in psychology; or a qualification deemed equivalent by the employer.
  3. Demonstrated understanding and skills in providing culturally responsive child centred, family focussed counselling, support and case management to individuals who have experienced sexual assault and/ or other forms of interpersonal violence and their families. Demonstrated ability to create connections, engagement and collaboration with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to affect outcomes with an understanding of intergenerational trauma, contextual and causal factors for violence, abuse and neglect and the principles of cultural safety. Demonstrated experience participating in and/or leading quality improvement activities, service development and evaluation.
  4. Demonstrated high level understanding of the dynamics and effects of sexual assault and demonstrated experience in best practice models for working with children, young people and adults who have experienced sexual abuse/ trauma and an understanding of legal and policy framework governing child protection in NSW.
  5. Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills in combination with a demonstrated ability to work as part of a small therapeutic team.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to specialist and cultural supervision and professional education and if relevant to application, experience providing clinical supervision and leading education and teaching to staff and/or students.
  7. Ability to participate in the PARVAN On Call Service, current unrestricted NSW Driver's License and willingness to provide services at different locations within NSLHD.
