What you'll be doing

Consultant Anaesthetists work in the Richmond Network of hospitals (Lismore Base Hospital, Ballina District Hospital & Casino Memorial Hospital), delivering a comprehensive range of anaesthesia & perioperative medicine services. This includes elective surgery (Lismore, Ballina & Casino) & Emergency Surgery(Lismore only), Endoscopy services including Gastroenterology, Bronchoscopy, Cardiology; Radiology procedures, Maternity, acute & complex pain services & Perioperative Clinics. There is a Duty Anaesthetist rostered Monday to Friday in Lismore Theatres to supervise & support Anaesthesia services within the district. We provide support to Emergency Department clinicians at Ballina & Casino hospitals on theatre days. Anaesthetists must be able to work independently in a single theatre hospital 30minutes from the Base Hospital.


As an accredited teaching hospital, we have 10 ANZCA trainees (on rotations from Queensland & NSW Anaesthesia programs, as well as a rural trainee) & Anaesthesia Provisional Fellow positions in Regional & Simulation. We also provide training for Emergency Department trainees & Critical Care JMO’s. We have been a centre for Regional Anaesthesia training for over 20 years & all consultants must have definitive skills in this area. We collaborate with the University Department of Rural Health to educate & support medical students.


The Department of Anaesthesia runs an extensive Anaesthesia teaching program that all consultants are expected to participate in. This includes tutorials, simulations (in-situ & at the University Simulation Centre), practice short answer questions for the primary exam, primary exam viva practice, skill sessions & scholar role activities. The Department Research & Audit Group assists with the clinical research within the hospital network. We are strengthening the Welfare Group within the department to provide definitive support structures for the consultants & trainees.


We have a close relationship with the Anaesthesia & Recovery Nursing staff at all our hospital locations, providing education on a regular basis.

  1. Eligible for full registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a Specialist Anaesthetist (to be registered prior to commencement)
  2. Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand college of Anaesthetists.
  3. Demonstrated recent clinical experience in Anaesthesia and be able to provide comprehensive anaesthesia services within all hospitals of the Network Surgical Services. This includes, elective, emergency, acute pain and perioperative services, inclusive of an extensive practice in regional anaesthesia and the applicant must demonstrate skills in this area.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and provide leadership of a team.
  5. Demonstrated effective clinical communication through the use of information technology and written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to teaching, continuing education, research and quality improvement.
  7. Availability to participate in an on-call roster and to respond on site within a reasonable time.
