Junior Medical Officer


The primary purpose of the Trainee Unaccredited Position is the assessment, investigation and initial management of patients presenting to the Emergency Department under the supervision of the Emergency Physician on duty.  Working in this position also serves to support completion of the Certificate and Diploma of Emergency Medicine through the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM). 

What you'll be doing

  • Manage patients in the Emergency Department in an autonomous manner with minimal supervision from the Specialist. 
  • Ensure entries in medical records include clinical assessment, tests or treatment planned, complications or side effects, problem list and discharge/admission plans.
  • Coordinate with surgical, nursing and other disciplines to ensure optimal care including diagnostic tests and consultations.
  • Ensure that review of all pathology, radiology and other diagnostic reports are undertaken and advising the supervising specialist of relevant results.
  • Communicate any significant change in the patient’s condition to the Specialist and undertake appropriate action. This may include initiating immediate treatment as appropriate in consultation with nursing staff. This may include cardio-pulmonary resuscitation of the patient.
  • Communicate patient-relevant information in a timely and clear manner to patients and their families/carers and all staff involved in the patient’s care, to facilitate shared decision-making and timely information transfer.

Essential requirements
  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia. 
  • Demonstrated clinical practice as a registered medical practitioner in the last 2 years in a setting appropriate to the needs of the position. 
  • Minimum three years postgraduate experience including 6 months minimum emergency medicine experience in an Australian Emergency Department in the last 2 years.
  • This position is subject to an appropriate supervision level which can be supported by the health agency. If the incumbent’s registration conditions include supervision requirements, the level of supervision must be able to be supported by the health agency for this role. 
  • Valid Working with Children Check, cleared National Police Check.
  • To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy, this includes any amendments made from time to time.

Selection criteria
  1. Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.
  2. Demonstrated ability to work autonomously within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
  3. Minimum three years postgraduate experience including 6 months minimum emergency medicine experience in an Australian Emergency Department in the last 2 years.
  4. Adept ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services.
  5. Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences.
  6. Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development and self-education.
  8. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
