Where you'll be working
Westmead Hospital is a leading centre of research, training and specialisation in all fields of Medicine and and Surgery. The new Westmead Health precinct is the principal referral hospital for Western Sydney Local Health District providing district level health services to Parramatta, Holroyd and The Hills Shire LGAs including tertiary and quaternary services to greater Western Sydney, greater metropolitan Sydney, rural NSW and other states.
Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospitals (BMDH) is a busy hospital which provides a 24-hour emergency service, intensive and high dependency care, sub-specialty acute medical and surgical care, obstetrics and newborn care and sub-acute rehabilitation.
Unaccredited trainees in Urology across the two sites will have excellent exposure to a wide range of clinical case loads including major open oncology, robotic assisted surgery, laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures. This position will be based 6 months at Blacktown Hospital and 6 months at Westmead Hospital.
What you'll be doing
Manage admitted urological patients in pre-operative assessment, assist at surgical procedures and manage patients postoperatively at all sites noted under location. Manage urological patients attending outpatients at Blacktown and Westmead hospitals under supervision of urological consultants.
Clinical:
Assess, manage and follow up of patients of Urology Surgical Service both as inpatients and outpatients.
To support senior clinicians.
To develop the required technical skills to participate in operating lists.
Provide Urology Surgery acute on call cover and be involved in the surgery on these patients when required.
Gain greater understanding of complex Urology cases and the development of assessment and diagnostic skills and become proficient in new skills appropriate in the field of urological surgery.
Develop leadership skills and in the multidisciplinary care of Urology cases.
Research and Teaching:
To coordinate audit and research activities.
To conduct studies for presentation and submission for publication.
To assist in gather data in preparation for publication.
To participate in all relevant education events in the Hospital.
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered, or eligible for registration with the medical board of Australia
- Evidence of continuing medical education and self-monitoring/audit practices that support credentialing to the position and are commensurate with the scope of practice requirements of the position.
- Sound clinical knowledge in Urological surgery demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position.
- High level interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated ability working within a multidisciplinary team.
- Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and evidence based best practice.
- Demonstrated commitment to teaching and supervision
- Familiarity with research concepts and commitment to support basic, applied or clinical research.
- Demonstrated participation in the supervision of junior medical staff.
