Unaccredited Trainee - General Surgery
Apply now to work at Lismore Base Hospital and its network sites as an Unaccredited Trainee in General Surgery for the 2026 clinical year. The successful applicant will gain valuable experience in our hospitals in the beautiful Northern NSW LHD / Richmond Network, working under the guidance of highly experienced specialist surgeons and registrars on placement to Lismore on The SET Program.
Trainees at Lismore Base Hospital gain experience in a broad range of surgery specialties including, general, orthopaedics, urology, vascular, ENT and facio-maxillary surgery. The mix will depend on your allocated terms throughout the year.
- Education: Formal JMO teaching in Lismore includes weekly surgical teaching, monthly Grand Rounds (Whole Hospital), and Friday’s surgical education sessions and M&M meetings. We also work closely with the University Centre for Rural Health (UCRH) who offer valuable teaching and simulations for medical officers in training.
- Career Progression: Following your unaccredited training year, trainees accepted onto The SET Program are able to complete placements at Lismore Base Hospital for periods ranging from 6 to 24 months.
Where you'll be working
Lismore Base Hospital (LBH) is the recognised Trauma Centre for the North Coast Region and is linked with the local helicopter retrieval service.
The hospital is an acute regional referral hospital of 280 beds on the Far North Coast of NSW, serving a population of approximately 170,000 people on the Far North Coast of NSW and has a busy Emergency Department (40,000 presentations annually), ICU and Coronary Care Unit, as well as Surgery (general, orthopaedic and speciality surgery), Paediatrics, Mental Health, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The Lismore Base Hospital theatres ward comprises of eight operating theatres, two endoscopy theatres and three recovery areas and both Ballina District Hospital and Casino & District Memorial Hospital have one theatre each.
LBH is an affiliated teaching hospital for medical students from the University of Sydney, University of Wollongong, University of Western Sydney and Bond University. The hospital has a strong commitment to teaching and support for its Junior Medical Officers.
Our region encompasses World Heritage listed rainforests and the pristine beaches of Evans Head, Ballina, Lennox Head and Byron Bay. This area is blessed by year-round sun, a tropical climate and a short winter. From lush hinterland villages, to Mount Warning, national parks, and sparkling beaches, the region is full of natural wonders and vibrant destinations all within a short drive from Lismore.

What you'll be doing
Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the trainee’s skills, knowledge and experience. The medical officer will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO). All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.
The position supports pre-requisites for future training positions with the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.

- Demonstrated ability to work independently in a supervised environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team with an understanding of the roles of the doctor and other members of the healthcare team.
- Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, family members and other members of the health care team.
- Demonstrated good organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
- Evidence of continuing professional development and commitment to self-education and commitment to participating in training and development opportunities to further develop skills and knowledge in the area of General Surgery.
