About the role 

The Manning Base Hospital Unaccredited Medical Trainee – Acute Medicine position offers committed trainees interested in a future of rural practice the opportunity to develop knowledge, skills and gain experience in providing effective medical services to patients under supervision, while developing expertise in medical practice, in a complex clinical environment in inpatients and outpatient areas in the public health organisation.  

This Unaccredited Training position is aimed at providing PGY4 Trainees and can offer rotations between General Medicine, Emergency Department, Acute Medicine (ED/ Short Stay), Critical Care (up to 4 positions should the applicant express interest in these focus areas).  

Upon completion of the Acute Medicine role, doctors will be well prepared to apply for trainee positions in Basic Physician Training, Intensive Care or Emergency Medicine, and will also have acquired many transferable skills that will be useful in other training programs such as Paediatrics and General PracticeThis role is also highly relevant to those wanting to be an acute generalist (e.g. ACCRM).  

Participation in relief / nights are expected on an equitable basis. 

The applicant must have a commitment to rural practice and rural communities.

Taree’s, town name comes from the Aboriginal word Djarii, meaning Figtree. Taree is situated on the banks of the Manning River in the heart of the beautiful Manning Valley, Biripi Country. A spectacular meeting point of coastal beauty and hinterland wonder, the Manning Valley is a gem on the NSW North Coast. Cruise the beautiful river, swim at stunning beaches and find bushwalks, waterfalls and lookouts along the way. 

Manning Hospital consists of 180 beds and, within, provides an excellent range of other specialist inpatient services including Emergency Medicine, Palliative Care, General Medicine, Paediatrics, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Intensive Care, Psychiatry, Renal, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Anaesthesia, Rehabilitation Services, Urology and Oncology Services to the local communities of Taree, Forster, Tuncurry and surrounding Lower Mid North Coast.  

Manning Base Hospital treats approximately 25,000 inpatients, 33,000 Emergency Department patients and 90,700 outpatients each year. 

With a population of over 90,300 and with the median age of 52 years old the Lower Mid North Coast Sector is projected to have the highest growth in the group age of 85 years and over.

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  2. At least three years' post graduate experience in public hospital service (or equivalent).
  3. Demonstrated recent relevant experience in clinical medicine and ability to work in a complex clinical environment.
  4. Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  5. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning, teaching and research and/or quality improvement in medicine.
  6. Demonstrated teamwork, time management and problem solving skills in a clinical setting within a multi-disciplinary team.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to professional development and to use this experience to further career development.
  8. Willingness or demonstrated capacity for participation in after hours, weekend and on-call rosters.
