Radiology Network Training LAN 1 (NSW)
Welcome to LAN 1 (NSW) Radiology Training Network, one of the biggest training geographical sites in NSW. LAN 1 strives to set high standards in Registrar education and training with a commitment to provide high quality Radiology Education programs cross all sites.
Trainees will be appointed to LAN 1, and have a home hospital by one of the four hospitals, where the trainee will be located most of their working/training time. (ie 4 out of 5 years)
Clinical Radiology Training Program:
The Clinical Radiology Training Program is designed as a five-year training program and structured in three major phases. This sequencing is to ensure trainees develop foundation knowledge and skills during Phase 1 and then can further develop their abilities and breadth of practice during Phase 2 of the training program. In Phase 3, trainees consolidate their skills and focus on areas of interest.
Trainees will be required to undertake 12 months of rotations outside home hospital.
- Year 1 Training
- Year 2 Training – 6 Month Rotation within the network (Preference Matched)
- Year 3 Training – 3 Month Rotations
- Year 4 Training experiential rotation
- Year 5 Training experiential rotation
Trainees will be required to complete all RANZCR assessments and prerequisites including:
- Passing the Phase 1 and Phase 2 exams by the required deadlines
- RANZCR E-Portfolio requirements
- Fulfil all experiential RANZCR requirements and projects and other 6-month assessments eg. DOTs Assessment, DOPS, Mini IPX and TATS
Trainees will receive regular structure Radiological teaching sessions held by consultants at each LAN 1 site (in addition to LAN training teaching).
LAN 1- 6 weeks Physics Teaching and Key Conditions Network Program.
WAN Education weekly for Year 2 and Year 3 Trainees on alternative Tuesday and Wednesdays
What you'll be doing
Radiology Trainees provide high quality radiology services whilst learning all stages of the radiological examinations of patients including referrals, triaging, supervision, performance, reporting and communication of the procedure. They will participate in all aspects of the Department of Medical Imaging, involving Clinical Radiologists as medical experts, including professionalism, teamwork, communication, advocacy and management
• Provide general Radiology consultation for patients referred to the department for radiological procedures.
• Participate in reporting of all diagnostic and intervention procedures undertaken in a timely manner under the supervision of the consultant Radiologist of the day.
• Perform radiological procedures and interventions, the range and complexity of which to be commensurate with experience and stage of training, guided by RANZCR curriculum requirements.
• By the end of training, the trainee should be able to provide effective radiology services to patients under supervision, while developing expertise in medical and imaging practice in a complex clinical environment.
The successful applicants will be appointed as The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists ("RANZCR") accredited Radiology Trainees in a NSW Health Radiology Training Network (ie. Local Area Network or LAN), and will be appointed to a “home hospital”, where the successful applicant(s) will be working and training the majority of the time. The position will involve rotations to other LAN sites and may encompass other curriculum requirements in order for the trainee to attain their Fellowship with RANZCR. Trainees will spend no more than four years at any single training site within their five year training program as per RANZCR.
Radiology training contracts comprise a two-year then a three-year contract to fulfil the five year training requirement. Length of contract will however depend on which training year you are applying for as follows:
Year 1 - contract is 2 years
Year 2 - contract is 1 year
Year 3 - contract is 3 years
Year 4 - contract is 2 years
Year 5 - contract is 1 year
Phase 1: Must complete by 24 Months, can progress to Phase 2 after 12 months.
Phase 2: Must complete by 60 Months, can progress to Phase 3 after 48 months.
Phase 3: Consolidation Phase, Four 3-month Sub-specialty rotations - completion of training 12 months.
Applying to RANZCR specialty training programs commencing in 2026
For all accredited training positions commencing in 2026 applicants are required to register with the College. This registration will need to be completed prior to any trainee job applications submitted to the jurisdictions.
In Australia, sites advertise clinical radiology training positions, then candidates apply directly to the hospital/sites/network and will need to submit their College Registration Verification Number (CRVN) as part of their application.

- Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.
- Demonstrated interest in Radiology and preparation for Radiology training (including Phase 1 RANZCR exams and other curriculum requirements). First year applicants only must submit a verification number from RANZCR in response to this criterion (Existing RANZCR Trainees applicants do not require a number).
- Demonstrated ability to work independently within a complex health care setting with proven time management, analytical and reasoning skills, and good common routine procedural skills.
- Excellent written, verbal and multimedia communication skills, in order to interact effectively with patients, referrers, colleagues and other team members.
- Understanding and promotion of collaborative effort and empathy within a heterogeneous team environment such as a radiology department.
- Excellent academic record commensurate with experience, evidence of on-going learning, teaching activities, potential involvement with projects and research publications.
- Understanding quality improvement principles, audit, implementation of practice improvement initiatives and commitment to continuing professional development.
- Experience in a broad spectrum of clinical disciplines prior to undertaking radiology training.
