Position: Radiology Trainee

Location: Liverpool Hospital, Prince of Wales Hospital, St George Hospital or St Vincent's Hospital

Position Details:

The successful applicant(s) will be appointed as The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists ("RANZCR") accredited Radiology Trainee(s) in the Southern NSW Radiology Training Network (i.e. Local Area Network 3 or LAN 3), and will be appointed to one of the "home hospitals" in the LAN 3 network (e.g. Liverpool Hospital, Prince of Wales Hospital, St George Hospital or St Vincent's Hospital), where the successful applicant(s) will be working and training the majority of the time.

Please note, there is no guarantee/obligation the successful applicant will be reappointed to the current hospital (or other hospital within LAN 3) at the end of the contract.

Please note, LAN 3 Trainees (during their five years of training) will be required to complete rotations to other LAN sites and may also encompass other curriculum requirements in order for the Trainee to attain their Fellowship with RANZCR.

In general, Trainees will spend no more than four years at any single training site within their five year training program as per RANZCR.

What you'll be doing

Trainees will be taught to learn, observe and participate in all stages of the radiological examination of patients including referral, triaging, supervision, performance, reporting and communication of the procedure. They will participate in all aspects of the Department of Medical Imaging, involving Clinical Radiologists as medical experts, including scholarship, professionalism, team work, communication, advocacy and management.

At the end of training, they will be expected to:

• Provide expert radiology advice to clinicians and referrers.

• Competently perform a variety of imaging guided procedures.

• Provide multi-disciplinary care to patients.

• Communicate their radiology interpretations verbally and in writing.

• Discuss the use of diagnostic and interventional procedures with patients and/or their carers.

• Demonstrate the safe use of medical imaging devices and associated pharmaceutical agents.

• Understand the importance of ethical radiological practice and patient confidentiality.

• Learn skills necessary to manage a radiological practice.

• Understand the importance of continuing professional development, lifelong learning, research and teaching in the continuing development of Clinical Radiology as a profession.

Contract lengths

In general, Radiology training contracts comprise a two-year then a three-year contract to fulfil the five year training requirement. Length of contract will however depend on which training year you are applying for as follows:

Year 1 - contract is 2 years

Year 2 - contract is 1 year

Year 3 - contract is 3 years

Year 4 - contract is 2 years

Year 5 - contract is 1 year

 

Local Background and Environment

The Southern NSW Radiology Training Network (LAN 3) spans several sites in Sydney as well as southern NSW.

Radiology trainees may be required to rotate or be rostered to work at any of the sites listed below.

The home hospital Medical Imaging Departments of LAN 3 are:

• St George Hospital

• Liverpool Hospital (incorporates Bankstown Hospital, Campbelltown Hospital, Fairfield Hospital and Breastscreen Liverpool)

• Prince of Wales Hospital (incorporates Royal Hospital for Women, Sydney Children’s Hospital and & Sydney Eye Hospital)

• St Vincent’s Hospital (including Sydney Breast Clinic and Royal Hospital for Women)

The linked sites are:

         The Children’s Hospital Westmead (for particular home hospital trainees)

         Wollongong Hospital

         Bankstown Hospital

         Campbelltown Hospital

         Fairfield Hospital

         Bathurst health service

         Orange health service

These sites encompass the full gamut of Clinical Radiology. Specific areas of interest include:

• Paediatric Radiology at the Sydney Children’s, Children’s Hospital Westmead and Campbelltown Hospitals

• Gynaecologic and Obstetric imaging at Campbelltown and St George Hospitals,

• Trauma Radiology at Liverpool, St George and St Vincent's Hospitals,

• Interventional Neuroradiology at Prince of Wales and Liverpool Hospitals,

• Breast Imaging at Prince of Wales, St George, Wollongong, Liverpool, Sydney Breast Clinic and Breastscreen sites

• Angiography and Interventional Radiology at Liverpool, Prince of Wales, St George, St Vincent’s and Wollongong.

The referral bases of the hospitals cover a large part of the population of Sydney and NSW, spanning all socioeconomic and age strata.

St George Hospital radiology trainees provide cover from 08:30 to 22:30, 7 Days a week.

Prince of Wales Hospital radiology trainees provide a 24/7 cover for the department including majority daytime (business hours) rosters in addition to participation in afterhours and weekend/public holiday on-site shift rosters.

St Vincent’s Hospital trainees provide afterhours cover from 5:30pm until 12am every weekday, and from 7:30am until 12am on weekends and public holidays.

Liverpool Hospital trainees provide on-site after hours CT cover to Liverpool and Campbelltown Hospital on weekdays from 5pm to midnight, on site weekend CT cover to Liverpool and Campbelltown Hospital from 8am to midnight, and off site on call every day from midnight to 730-8am next day.

Radiology services for Prince of Wales, Sydney Children’s Hospitals & Sydney Eye Hospital and the Royal Hospital for Women are provided by Prince of Wales Medical Imaging Department.

Trainees can be required to rotate to Wollongong Hospital as well as the rural sites: Bathurst health service and Orange health service.

Please note, LAN 3 home hospitals may also report cases on the PACS involving remote sites allocated to the home hospital. LAN 3 is currently accredited by RANZCR for the following trainee position numbers:

18 trainees at Prince of Wales Hospital  

5 trainees at St George Hospital

12 trainees at St Vincent’s Hospital (including 1 linked to rural site)

19 trainees at Liverpool Hospital (including Bankstown, Campbelltown Hospitals, Fairfield Hospital and Breastscreen Liverpool)

2 trainees at The Wollongong Hospital (1 each linked to Prince of Wales and St Vincent’s)

Total of 56 Trainee positions

The Wollongong Hospital positions are allocated to LAN 3 trainees with trainees from the network rotated for a term at a time.

Selection Criteria

1. Qualifications and experience commensurate with the "Essential Requirements" (refer to position description) for the role.

2. Demonstrated interest in Radiology and preparation for Radiology training. First year applicants only must submit a verification number from RANZCR in response to this criterion (Existing RANZCR Trainees applicants do not require a number).

3. Demonstrated ability to work independently within a complex health care setting with proven time management, analytical and reasoning skills, and good common routine procedural skills.

4. Excellent written, verbal and multimedia communication skills, in order to interact effectively with patients, referrers, colleagues and other team members.

5. Understanding and promotion of collaborative effort and empathy within a heterogeneous team environment such as a radiology department.

6. Excellent academic record commensurate with experience, evidence of on-going learning, teaching activities, potential involvement with projects and research publications.

7. Understanding quality improvement principles, audit, implementation of practice improvement initiatives and commitment to continuing professional development.

8. Experience in a broad spectrum of clinical disciplines prior to undertaking radiology training.
