The Royal Hospital for Women has been one of Australia’s foremost specialist hospitals for women and babies since its early beginnings as New South Wales first lying-in hospital for women in 1820. As a principal teaching hospital of the University of New South Wales in the fields of obstetrics, gynaecology and neonatology the Royal has a history of innovation in women’s health care services, teaching and research.

The main areas of specialisation include breast care, gynaecology, gynaecological oncology, maternity, maternal-fetal medicine, menopause, newborn intensive care and reproductive medicine.

Each year the Hospital delivers more than 3,000 babies; cares for more than 600 premature babies; performs more than 3000 surgical procedures and has over 2000 visits through our Early Pregnancy Assessment Service (EPAS).

The Royal Hospital for Women is close to some of Sydney's best beaches, restaurants and sporting facilities and only fifteen (15) minutes from the Sydney Central Business District and harbour, adding a quality lifestyle to the satisfaction that comes from working within a committed and decided team. The Royal Hospital for Women is situated between the University of New South Wales and Coogee Beach.

Accredited training positions are available for junior medical officers with some experience in obstetrics and gynaecology. The training program offers a wide variety of experiences in general obstetrics and gynaecology and trainees are exposed to high-risk obstetrics, laparoscopic endoscopy, gynaecology oncology, gynaecological endocrinology, adolescent gynaecology, menopause and reproductive medicine. This will vary depending on individual needs and service provision needs.

The primary purpose of the position is to provide quality obstetric and gynaecological care to patients in a complex clinical environment. Trainees will work under an appropriate level of supervision according to their level of competence to evaluate, diagnose, treat and provide consultation to female patients of all ages presenting in any condition or stage of pregnancy or the puerperium; and female patients presenting with illnesses, injuries and disorders of the gynaecological or genitourinary system.

Trainees in Obstetrics and Gynaecology will work in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings including inpatient ward care, birthing unit, theatres and outpatients (e.g. antenatal, postnatal and gynaecology) clinics. 

To provide clinical care in normal hours and after hours and meet requirements of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Training Program.

    1. Qualifications commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role, and relevant experience
    2. Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary team, including providing leadership and direction to ensure appropriate management of patients
    3. Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise
    4. Demonstrated time management and problem solving skills
    5. Demonstrated excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and computer skills.
    6. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management
    7. Evidence of continuing professional development and commitment to self-education.
    8. Previous experience in and willingness to deliver undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and training.
