Central Coast Local Health District (CCLHD) has an opportunity for suitably trained and experienced medical officers interested in working on the Central Coast.  We value our staff as our most important resource and strive to provide support and development opportunities throughout your career with us and we invite you to be part of our community.

The Anaesthetic Department has over 70 consultants (Staff Specialists and VMO Anaesthetists), 36 FTE Trainees (including PF’s) and 8 Residents. Our department is highly motivated and committed to teaching and training. Good Part 1 & Part 2 exam pass rates are seen, supported by regular Part 1 & 2 teaching & exam preparation courses which are in addition to teaching sessions for introductory trainees and for provisional fellows, and practical workshops. Workshops include in house ALS & CICO for trainees, regional workshops, Neonatal Resuscitation, Retrieval Medicine training, Chest Tube workshop & Trauma Team training. The department also runs in conjunction with CC Simulation Centre; the Awake Fibre Optic Intubation Course (currently the only one of its type in Australia) & Difficult Airway Workshops.

CCLHD recruits to two separate training schemes for ANZCA training.  The Central Coast Training Network (CCTN) has rotations to Royal Prince Alfred, St Vincent’s, Sydney Children’s & Gosford Private Hospitals, with rural rotations to Dubbo & Coffs Harbour.  This allows the CCTN to offer a unique training experience. Experience in a general hospital in the early years of training exposures trainees to paediatrics & obstetrics throughout their training, whilst the rotations to major tertiary centres allows trainees to complete all ANZCA SSUs. The rotation to Gosford Private Hospital gives trainees an insight into private anaesthetic practice as well as the opportunity to self-allocate to busy paediatric ENT, neuro, orthopaedic and cardiac lists.  The Northern Region Training Scheme is split between CCLHD & John Hunter Hospital.

We offer a Regional Provisional Fellowship program and a Retrieval Provisional Fellowship program (run jointly with Hunter Retrieval Service), in addition to general anaesthesia PF programmes, offering good options for a Provisional Fellow wanting to prepare themselves for their first consultant job.

Gosford Hospital is the central point of administration for Coastal Health Care. Together with Wyong, it provides a capacity of around 700 inpatient beds for the bulk of the surgical services on the Coast. This is increasing, with $380M redevelopment projects recently completed at both Gosford and Wyong Hospitals.

Caseload is around 26,000 per year and rising with specialties including vascular (with an increasing endoluminal workload as well as major open vascular procedures), major urology (including nephrectomies) and a developing chronic pain service, all supported by a brand new 20-bed ICU. Because the local population includes significant numbers of families with young children plus retirees, there is a challenging mix of ages and comorbidities, producing excellent and varied clinical experiences. CCLHD has strong connections with Royal North Shore Hospital (default matrix) and is affiliated with the University of Newcastle.

The NSW Central Coast is positioned between Sydney and Newcastle, with a population that is expected to grow from the current approximate 300,000 to 450,000 before 2030.

Gosford Hospital is the principal referral hospital and a trauma centre for the Central Coast, with approximately 500 inpatient beds and 24-hour access to its Emergency Department and Operating Theatres. Inpatient services include Coronary and Intensive Care, General Medicine, Neurology, Renal, Geriatrics, General Surgery, Obstetrics, Mental Health, Paediatric and Emergency services. Outpatient and community services include Allied Health, Dental, Podiatry, Nursing, Child and Adolescent and Family Health, Drug and Alcohol, and Cardiac Rehabilitation.

Wyong Hospital is an acute major metropolitan hospital providing inpatient, outpatient and emergency services to residents in the northern part of the NSW Central Coast. Wyong Hospital has approx 300 inpatient beds and provides a range of medical, surgical and critical care services. Specialty services include Intensive Care, Coronary Care, Drug and Alcohol, Gastroenterology, Stroke, Mental Health, Rehabilitation, Orthopaedics, Vascular, Urology and Cancer services. Wyong Hospital is further developing its role as a district general hospital for a growing population with a $200 million expansion now completed, that delivered a new Emergency Department, ICU, Paediatric unit, Theatre and inpatient units allowing the further development of clinical services.

Please note that Gosford and Wyong Hospitals recruit for Scheme and 12 month Independent positions simultaneously, with one application.  You will be asked to preference between the 2 schemes and independent jobs at the time of interview, if you are invited to one.  This is separate to the state-wide preferencing organized by Blacktown Hospital.
