Trainee - Ophthalmology
Positions are for applicants with RANZCO confirmed eligibility for the Vocational Training Positions (VTP) with a proven ability to deliver excellent clinical care in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
The RETN – Western NSW Pathway is based at Orange Hospital with rotations to the Royal Hobart Hospital, Wagga Wagga, Liverpool Hospital, Westmead Children’s Hospital, Orange Hospital, and also to other accredited training posts within RANZCO’s training networks.
Trainees will work under supervision of Specialist Ophthalmologists to assess, investigate, diagnose, treat and provide ongoing management of Ophthalmology inpatients and outpatients performing clinical procedures under supervision or as approved, to provide high quality patient care, whilst building on skills to become competent in the practice of Ophthalmology in accordance with RANZCO training requirements.

The Royal Hobart Hospital
The Royal Hobart Hospital is the tertiary referral hospital for Tasmania and the principal teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania Medical School and provides most public specialist medical services for southern Tasmania.
The Royal Hobart Hospital Ophthalmology Department has consultants with a broad range of subspecialty interests including vitreoretinal surgery, medical retina, glaucoma, oculoplastics, cornea, paediatric ophthalmology, and genetic eye disease.
The Eye Clinic is well-appointed with up-to-date facilities and equipment. The Ophthalmology Department provides an active teaching and research program in conjunction with the University of Tasmania.
The RETN ophthalmology registrar roster includes subspecialty and general ophthalmology clinics, laser clinics, injection clinics and operating theatre sessions. The registrar will work in a team with 2 other ophthalmology trainees and an unaccredited registrar and take part in the 1 in 4 after-hours on-call roster.
Wagga Wagga Base Hospital
Wagga Wagga Base Hospital is one of the busiest rural hospitals in NSW with 325 beds, 40,000 emergency presentations, 1,100 births and approximately 11,000 operations annually. The hospital is in its final stages of a $431 million redevelopment and facilities include:
- 24 hour Emergency Department equipped with telehealth cameras to connect the team in Wagga Wagga with other specialists or GPs across the state through the Critical Care Advisory Service, ensuring you get the care you need.
- A purpose-built Health Services Hub which opened in 2021. The new facility, linked to the Wagga Wagga Base Hospital, offers a range of important services from a single site. The multi-storey building accommodates acute aged care inpatient beds, rehabilitation inpatient beds, an older person's mental inpatient unit, Hospital in the Home, expanded renal dialysis unit, expanded oral (dental) service, 60 clinic rooms and treatment spaces for allied health, outpatient, and community health services. There is also a Staff Hub and 30 staff meeting rooms of varying sizes with an electronic booking system and the latest presentation technology; a new lecture theatre and two nearby conference rooms, new clinical education and training spaces, including a simulation room and skills area and facilities for virtual training; a library, a dedicated Aboriginal meeting room and cultural courtyard; cafe; new multi-faith space; and facilitiies for corporate volunteers. There is also secure parking for fleet vehicles under the Health Services Hub.
- Specialised Mental Health Unit, which opened in 2013, to provide a large modern and comfortable facility. Community mental health services are co-located on the campus in the new Health Services Hub.
Wagga Wagga Health Service provides services including critical care, medical, surgical, paediatric, obstetric, and rehabilitation care. We also provide mental health and community health services. We work with a team of specialists which include cardiovascular, gastroenterology, renal medicine, obstetrics, orthopaedics, psychiatry and paediatrics. There is also the provision of a full range of allied health and support services such as oral health, physiotheraphy, occupational therapy, sexual health and violence prevention and response services.

Orange Health Service
Orange Health Services is a 270-bed major non-metropolitan referral hospital, serving a population of 300,000. It constitutes the largest Rural Campus in the Southern Hemisphere. It is the regional trauma centre for Western NSW and has a fully FACEM staffed ED. The Intensive Care Unit is the referral unit for the Local Health District. It is a level 5 unit and is staffed accordingly. There are a comprehensive range of specialist services including almost all medical and surgical services, with the exception of spinal, burns, cardiothoracic and neurosurgical. Of note, there are services such as interventional cardiology, and endovascular suite, and excellent on-site digital radiology, including a 3T MRI and 2 LINACs for radiation oncology. Orange Health Service also has acute specialists in cardiology, renal, gastroenterology, respiratory medicine, haematology, neurology, ophthalmology and specialists in medical and radiation oncology. There are also local specialists in palliative care, nuclear medicine and dermatology.
Orange Health Service is a teaching hospital associated with the University of Sydney and Charles Sturt University. There is an excellent record of success in college professional exams and also future placement with metropolitan hospital training programs.

As part of your training pathway, you will rotate to Sydney for 1 year of subspecialty training. During this period, you may spend time in several accredited training posts.
Throughout your 5-year training journey, you may also have the opportunity to rotate through other RANZCO accredited training posts.
Qualifications - External

1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia
2. Completion of 2 years postgraduate years of medical practice by the start of the new JMO clinical year
3. RANZCO confirmed eligibility for the Vocational Training Position (VTP)
4. Demonstrated record in working independently in a supervised clinical environment combining self- education and continued professional development, an ability to consistently apply established knowledge and skill, initiative and ability to seek guidance to resolve issues when required
5. Demonstrated record to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and commitment to the organisation.
6. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management
7. Demonstrated evidence of participation and leadership in extracurricular activities to benefit the community
