About the Position
We are seeking motivated and enthusiastic Specialist Anaesthetists (FANZCA) who wish to pursue a career in a regional hospital. The position would also be ideal for a Specialist International Medical Graduate (SIMG) who has been assessed as 'substantially comparable' by ANZCA (unfortunately we are not be able to provide the necessary oversight for those deemed 'partially comparable'). You will be well supported by a team of colleagues with a good mix of experience and enthusiasm, providing mentoring and support, with full-time and part-time opportunities.

Opportunities exists for refining and improving regional anesthesia techniques will arise based on the diverse nature of upcoming cases. There are abundant chances to contribute to a multidisciplinary team approach in handling various cases, including involvement in pre-optimization care within a growing community of anesthesiologists and other specialties. Furthermore, there is potential to enhance non-clinical skills by participating in cutting-edge simulation centers and promoting simulation training for all personnel. Opportunity to become a part of the ANU to support medical students in their teaching and training endeavors, including assisting with their third-year population health projects, with the possibility of winning prizes from the LHD if nominated.

Where you'll be working
Opportunities exist at both South East Regional Hospital Bega and Goulburn Base Hospital. 

The new build 90 bed South East Regional Hospital (SERH) opened in March 2016. It is approximately 2.5 hours from Canberra by road, has daily flights to Sydney and Melbourne from nearby Merimbula, 10 minutes to the beach and 2.5 hours to snowfields.  SERH provides an emergency department, medical and surgical inpatient beds, maternity unit, paediatric unit, subacute rehabilitation unit, critical care unit, operating theatres including day surgery, renal dialysis chairs, oncology area, Hospital in the Home and separate mental health unit.

There are three operating theatres and one procedure room performing over 4000 operations and procedures per year (2018); and a six bed critical care unit (ICU / HDU / CCU). The Department of Anaesthesia’s current medical establishment is approximately 6 FTE Anaesthetists including six FANZCAs, three GP Anaesthetists and a RGA (Rural Generalist Anaesthesia) GP Registrar. The department is experienced in supervising international medical graduates (SIMG) through their clinical assessment period.

Goulburn Base Hospital is 90-100 bedded Regional teaching hospital affiliated to ANU rural school with 3rd and 4th year med students rotating through. There is a level 4 intensive care unit supporting the hospital along with a 24/7 ED services. In operating theatres GBH does a variety of simple to complex cases, runs a very efficient Perioperative services with a special focus on ERAS principles for elective joint replacement surgeries. Successful applicants will be required to join the on call team as well

Forget about sitting in traffic for hours and paying for parking, live in the city you'll be minutes away from work (perhaps even close enough to walk or cycle) and even if you live on a property outside of Goulburn or in one of the neighbouring villages, it's still a much shorter trip than big city living. That's more time for family, friends and recreation. More time to live. Goulburn is 45 minutes from Canberra, 2hrs to the beach and 2hrs from Sydney. 

What you'll be doing

Provide contemporary comprehensive specialist services in Anaesthesia for optimal patient outcomes. Working as a Specialist International Medical Graduate or Visiting Medical Officer with negotiable hours to be agreed with the Clinical Director or the Director of Medical Services. 

Provide and support training to clinicians across multiple disciplines to achieve quality education and safe clinical practice. 

Selection Criteria: 

  1. Holds registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist in Anaesthetics, and/or overseas trained specialist pathways.
  2. Demonstrated effective clinical communication through the use of information technology and written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
  3. Demonstrated significant experience relevant to Anaesthesia practice and evidence of competence in skills relevant to Australian rural hospital practice, including trauma and emergency scenarios.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and provide leadership of a team
  5. Demonstrated commitment to teaching, continuing education, research and quality improvement.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to behaviours which align to the NSW Health CORE values and SNSWLHD Values, goals and strategies.
