About Us:

The Primary Care and Community Health Unit consists of 9 centres that provide a range of services for children, young people and their families, adults, older people and their carers. Our services range from health promotion, prevention and early detection through to assessment, treatment and continuing care. Our staff work in partnership with schools, GPs, hospitals, non-government agencies and other organisations to provide care across our centres, in people’s homes, other community venues as well as virtual care (telehealth). 

This position is a multi-level/grade position open to applicants with varying skills levels, we encourage all interested applicants to apply. The successful candidate will have some experience supporting people who have experienced trauma and will be supported to grow their skills in the provision of specialist therapeutic and case management services to Aboriginal adults and children who have been sexually assaulted or who are under the age of 10 years with problematic and sexually harmful behaviours (Safe Wayz), and their non-offending family members.

You will join a highly supportive tertiary trauma counselling team providing both crisis and ongoing counselling interventions, alongside community education and other prevention focused activities. The service adopts a strength-based, family focussed and culturally centred trauma-informed approach to working with children and families. 
 
The Aboriginal Sexual Assault Counsellor will support engagement with Aboriginal communities, stakeholders and clients; also providing cultural consultation to support non-Aboriginal clinicians working with First Nations children and families where appropriate. Professional development will be provided alongside generous clinical supervision, cultural supervision and peer supervision arrangements. The team will suit clinicians who enjoy diverse, fast paced, client-centred work with a strong dedication to reducing violence in the lives of individuals and communities whilst contributing to the decolonisation of NSW Health services.

What you will bring to the role:

  1. This is an identified Aboriginal Position. Applicants must be of Aboriginal descent. Exemption is claimed under Section 14d of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977. Aboriginal applicants must demonstrate Aboriginality in addition to addressing the Selection Criteria. Being female is recognized as a genuine occupation qualification for this position and is authorized under section 31(2h) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
  2. Accepted qualifications include: • Qualification in Social Work which provides eligibility for full membership to Australian Association of Social Workers or • Psychology: General registration with the Psychology Board of Australia and, for Senior Psychologist, a current Senior Psychologist or eligible for Senior Psychologist grading (with no less than 12 months service at the 9th year of service and thereafter rate) and, for Clinical Psychologist, an accredited Masters or Doctorate in Clinical Psychology with endorsement or working towards endorsement with the Psychology Board of Australia.
  3. Experience providing culturally appropriate trauma focused therapeutic supports for Aboriginal individuals and families in regards to sensitive issues.
  4. Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  5. Demonstrated ability to create Aboriginal community connections, engagement, and collaborations.
  6. Demonstrated understanding of the intersection between issues of intergenerational trauma, colonisation, sexual assault, domestic violence and child protection.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a therapeutic team and to manage competing tasks in a busy service.
  8. Current Drivers Licence and ability to attend Nepean Hospital within 1 hour to participate in the 24/7 crisis on-call service.
