What you’ll be doing
The primary purpose of the role is to provide effective clinical management of surgical patients, under appropriate supervision, in a complex clinical environment. The doctor is the key person who works closely with all members of a multi-disciplinary team and deals with matters of an urgent or sensitive nature, whilst exercising discretion, sensitivity and maintaining confidentiality.
Positions in the Surgical Skills Training Networks are for junior doctors who are working towards entry into the Surgical Education and Training Program with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. These networked positions require rotations through several hospitals.
Where you’ll be working
The Senior Resident Medical Officer in General Surgery position is part of the Southern Surgical Skills Network which includes St George Hospital, Sutherland Hospital and Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital. It will be a requirement for you to be seconded to at least one of the hospitals other than St George for 3 months.

St George Hospital and Health Services is an accredited, principal teaching hospital of the University of New South Wales. It is the largest hospital within South Eastern Sydney Local Health District with 627 inpatient beds. St George Hospital is a Level 1 Trauma Centre and a leading centre for trauma and emergency management in NSW. The hospital’s proximity to Sydney airport makes it a vital service providing first response to the airport precinct.
The hospital is in Kogarah, 14 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD. It is well serviced by buses, trains and major roads. The area is well known for its cosmopolitan cafes and restaurants, as well as its food and cultural markets which showcase the distinct flavours and traditions of Kogarah's multicultural community.
St George is a principal referral hospital providing a wide range of secondary, tertiary, and quaternary services. These hospitals have a full range of diagnostic and consultative services. The clinical year is divided into 3-month terms through which you will be rotated. There may be an opportunity to stay in a term for a 6-month period, depending on performance and popularity of the rotation.
Being part of the Southern Surgical Skills Network may mean you are required to have dealings outside the hospital with HETI and CSTC. Within the hospital the network is governed by the Network Management Committee, which meets once a term and your participation in this meeting is welcome. You will be supported by the Surgical Superintendent at St George Hospital.

.Selection Criteria
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
- A minimum of 2 full years of postgraduate experience
- Completed either GSSE of two RACS required courses; CCrISP, EMST/ATLS, ASSET, CLEAR
- A professional attitude and flexibility in work role with a preparedness and ability to participate in after-hours overtime and on-call rosters.
- Demonstrated commitment to the General surgical training program
- Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills and judgment and expertise.
- Demonstrated teamwork, time management and problem solving skills as part of a multidisciplinary team.
