Sydney Local Health District is seeking a highly motivated Senior Resident Medical Officer with an interest in surgery to join the Colorectal Team at RPA Hospital.

What you will be doing:

This position is designed to benefit a junior doctor who wishes to pursue a career in general surgery. The position involves 12 months of advanced colorectal surgery, with a 6 month rotation focusing on the peritonectomy program and a 6 month rotation with a focus on pelvic exenteration surgery. There is also exposure to all other aspects of colorectal surgery during the year.

You will be involved in assessment and management of inpatients in consultation with your team of experienced Colorectal Surgeons and Fellows, supervise and teach more junior medical officers and attend and assist in the operating theatre and outpatient clinics. You will have the opportunity to enhance your clinical and surgical skills through participation in the General Surgical on-call roster and formal and informal teaching sessions.

Bedside teaching of medical students, along with preparation and presentation of departmental audits and cases is expected, whilst research activities are encouraged and supported.

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. Minimum 3 years postgraduate medical experience at the commencement of the post with recent demonstrated surgical experience appropriate to a doctor in the early part of their surgical career.
  3. Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication and computer skills.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilizing excellent clinical skills, judgement and expertise.
  5. Demonstrated effective teamwork, time management and problem solving skills as part of a multidisciplinary clinical care team.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to pursuing a career in surgery with a view to future training with RACS including completion of or preparation for the RACS Surgical Sciences Examination.
  7. Evidence of continued professional development appropriate to an early surgical career, commitment to self-directed education and teaching of undergraduates and postgraduates.
  8. Demonstrated knowledge of and application of key NSW Ministry of Health Policy Directives relevant to inpatient surgical care.
