Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital

Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital is a major metropolitan teaching hospital. Patients can access a range of services including coronary care, intensive care, orthopaedics, general medicine, surgical, obstetric, respiratory, rehabilitation, paediatric, maternity and emergency care. The hospital also provides a wide range of outpatient services including allied health, dental and podiatry clinics, child, adolescent and family health, drug and alcohol, health promotion and rehabilitation and aged care. An acute mental health service is co-located at Hornsby Hospital. The new $265 million Stage 2 redevelopment was officially opened in June 2022.

What you'll be doing
The primary purpose of the position is to manage patients requiring critical care in Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care or Anaesthesia, those at risk of clinical deterioration requiring care, plus pre- and post-care evaluation, as directed and overseen by supervising consultants in those departments; while developing expertise in medical practice, in a complex clinical environment.

The Critical Care Senior Resident Medical Officer works under supervision, assisting to manage, diagnose and treat the disturbances associated with severe medical and surgical illness and the conditions that cause them. 




  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia
  2. Completion of at least two years satisfactory full-time post-graduate experience, including recent clinical practice as a registered medical practitioner in an Australian Health System or within the approved competent authority pathway with recent experience in intensive care and/or anaesthesia and/or emergency medicine.
  3. Demonstrated commitment to participating in training and development opportunities to further develop skills and knowledge in critical care areas of medicine.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with key persons or services
  5. Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment with commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
