Sydney Local Health District is seeking 20 highly motivated Senior Resident Medical Officers with a keen interest in surgery to join the SRMO Surgical Education Pathway, based at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. These positions are designed to support junior doctors who aspire to pursue a surgical career.
Where you will be working
Surgical SRMOs will rotate through three terms across a range of surgical specialties, including Cardiothoracic, Colorectal, ENT, Hepatobiliary, Plastics, Urology, and Vascular Surgery. Rotations may also include placements at Westmead Children’s Hospital and Alice Springs Hospital.
In addition, the role includes a dedicated network relief term, during which SRMOs provide relief cover for SET trainees across the Central Network. This may involve working at affiliated hospitals such as Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, Auburn, Blacktown, Orange, and Dubbo Base Hospitals.
You will participate in a rotational roster that includes day, evening, and night shifts as part of your surgical terms.
What you will be doing
As an SRMO, you will be involved in the assessment and management of patients under the supervision of your clinical team. Your responsibilities will include supporting and supervising more junior medical staff, attending and assisting in operating theatres, and participating in outpatient clinics as required.
This position offers opportunities to enhance your clinical and surgical skills through after-hours rostered overtime, on-call duties, and participation in both formal and informal teaching sessions. You are expected to further develop your abilities in history taking, physical examination, clinical assessment, and patient management in each specialty rotation.
Research is actively encouraged and supported. In addition, SRMOs are expected to contribute to the teaching of medical students, interns, and nursing staff. Formal teaching opportunities may be available during certain rotations, in addition to those offered through the RPAH Institute of Academic Surgery.

- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
- Minimum 2 years postgraduate medical experience at the commencement of the post with recent demonstrated surgical experience appropriate to a doctor in the early part of their surgical career.
- Demonstrated commitment to pursuing a surgical career with a view to future training with RACS including completion of or preparation for the RACS Surgical Sciences Examination.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and computer skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilizing excellent clinical skills, judgement and expertise.
- Demonstrated effective teamwork, time management, problem solving skills as part of a multidisciplinary clinical care team, as well as evidence of advocacy for patients, colleagues and populations.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and application of key NSW Ministry of Health Policy Directives relevant to inpatient surgical care, and commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
- Evidence of continued professional development appropriate to an early surgical career JMO, commitment to self-directed education and teaching.
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
