Junior Medical Officer


This position serves as an introduction to emergency medicine and gives the SRMO a broad experience in emergency medicine and critical care with a view to applying for provisional training with the ACEM. However, it also serves as a general SRMO position for those JMOs who have not yet decided on a final career path or those who may be interested in pursuing GP training or another specialty.

Nepean Hospital is the tertiary referral unit for Blue Mountains and Lithgow Hospitals as well as the Central West of NSW. The Hospital is designated as a regional trauma centre with all major medical and surgical specialties on site and is affiliated with the University of Sydney. The new ED opened in early 2023 as part of the stage 1 redevelopment. It provides an excellent area to provide care for our patients in a modern and spacious environment. There are increased bed spaces with 5 active resus bays and a designated paediatric area. The hospital building also includes new medical wards, theatres, and catheter laboratory.

What you'll be doing

  • Assessing, investigating and initially managing patients presenting to the Emergency Department under supervision of senior emergency doctors.
  • Taking an active role in the resuscitation room and learning procedural skills.
  • Communicating clearly to patients and their relatives where appropriate, the findings of assessment and the plan of management
  • Undertaking education and various other quality assurance activities carried out within the department.
  • Participating in 24/7 rotating roster of days, evenings, nights and weekends.

Where you'll be working

  • Nepean Emergency sees approximately 75,000 patients per year, of which about 36% are admitted to hospital. Approximately 20% of these patients are under 14 years of age.
  • Staffed by 50 Emergency Physicians providing up to 5 consultants per shift from 0700-2400, with Advanced Trainee cover overnight.
  • Consultant special interests including retrieval, toxicology, ultrasound and medical education.
  • Designated Regional Trauma Centre by the Institute of Trauma and Injury Management.
  • f you decide to join the training program, the ED is accredited for all Provisional Trainees and the maximum 3 years of advanced training in Emergency Medicine.

Essential requirements
  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
  • Applicants who are not currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia must meet English language skills registration standard (medical) and attach evidence of this to their application.
  • Completion of at least two postgraduate years by the time of commencement of employment.
  • Appropriate experience in an Australian Emergency Department, or in an equivalent setting or discipline, in the last 2 years.
  • Sufficient clinical experience in order to undertake the key accountabilities for this role.
  • This position is subject to an appropriate supervision level which can be supported by the health agency.
  • If the incumbent's registration conditions include supervision requirements, the level of supervision must be able to be supported by the health agency for this role.
  • Adept good organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
  • Valid Working with Children Check, cleared National Police Check.
  • To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy, this includes any amendments made from time to time.

  1. Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role
  2. Demonstrated ability to work independently in a supervised environment.
  3. Adept ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team with an understanding of the roles of the doctor and other members of the healthcare team.
  4. Adept written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, family members and others members of the health care team.
  5. Adept good organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
  7. Evidence of continuing professional development and commitment to self-education.
