This deadly opportunity is embedded within the Safeguards 6-week intensive therapeutic program, providing culturally responsive mental health care for Aboriginal children and young people.

Working within iCAMHS Macarthur, you'll be backing families, ensuring mental health care is not just clinical but rich in culture and connection to Country, kin, and community. You’ll be part of a solid Aboriginal Mental Health Team, a powerhouse of Clinicians, Senior/Principal Health Workers, and Mental Health Workers, who are grounded in cultural ways, working with our mob to ensure cultural safety and respect.

Your role is more than a job—it’s a commitment to making our mental health services stronger, safer, and more connected. You’ll be a cultural mentor, guiding and supporting other workers while ensuring Aboriginal voices shape the care provided. As part of a growing network, you’ll be leading the way in Macarthur to Wingecarribee, supporting and uplifting the wellbeing of our community.

The team joins a well-established Aboriginal Mental Health Team in SWSLHD that includes Aboriginal Mental Health clinicians and Aboriginal mental health workers in various community teams. The Aboriginal Mental Health Team is part of the larger SWSLHD Aboriginal Health Service that includes a number of specific teams (ie Hospital Liaison, Chronic Care, Child and Family, Drug Health, Youth Health, Health Promotion etc.)

What You'll be Doing
Safeguards is an assertive outreach mental health team for under 18-year-old young people experiencing mental health crisis. The outreach model of care was created to be able to engage and support our most vulnerable young people, who have barriers to engaging with clinic-based services.

The primary role of this position is to provide culturally responsive, recovery oriented, evidence-based assessment and interventions to Aboriginal consumers of Safeguards and their family and carers. The position holder is also responsible for providing professional and cultural support to Aboriginal Mental Health staff in the Southern Western Sydney region ensuring they feel culturally safe in their roles and are supported to deliver culturally responsive care. The Principal Aboriginal Mental Health Worker will play a key role in ensuring Macarthur Safeguards has systems and relationships in place that support the delivery of culturally responsive care to Aboriginal consumers and their families.

SWSLHD operates it’s services on the lands of the Dharawal, Darug and Gundungurra people and has a rich history of working alongside local Aboriginal communities and our district’s Aboriginal Health Unit. You will be provided with cultural supervision, participate in cultural strengths mapping and form part of a larger, supportive Aboriginal workforce.

  1. This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Position. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal and being accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14 of the Anti Discrimination Act 1977.
  2. For the Principal AHW: Holds a university degree qualification and a willingness to obtain a post graduate qualification relevant to Mental Health. For the Senior AHW: Certificate IV Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Health Care or other relevant qualifications and /or relevant experience working within Aboriginal Health programs.
  3. Demonstrated understanding of the range of factors that have influenced the health status of Aboriginal communities with a focus on social and emotional wellbeing.
  4. Demonstrated experience playing a leadership role in the development and delivery of culturally responsive health services to Aboriginal communities.
  5. Ability to undertake health/social needs assessments that demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of Aboriginal culture and social issues in relation to mental health; and make referrals to community service providers.
  6. Demonstrated experience working effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide care coordination or case management services to Aboriginal clients and their families.
  7. Demonstrated ability to establish systems that maintain the cultural integrity of services and to contribute to ongoing service review and evaluation.
  8. Highly developed written and verbal communication skills and computer skills.
  9. Demonstrated experience developing service networks and referral pathways that support access to services.
  10. Applicants must possess an Australian C-Class driver's license (including P1 or P2). Those who hold a C class license (P1 or P2 included) from a state other than NSW must obtain a NSW C class (P1 or P2 included) license within three months of appointment. Learner's licenses are not permitted.
