What you'll be doing
We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Respiratory Physiologist/Scientist to join our Respiratory Laboratory at Blacktown Hospital in New South Wales.

We deliver a wide range of respiratory testing and the department is currently staffed by one junior scientist. Blacktown is a tertiary hospital with a wide range of specialities. We are located in an area of increasing population growth and the lab is expected to grow further over time.

You will be responsible for the day to day running of the lung function laboratory in addition to supervision of the current junior scientist. You will be performing lung function tests for outpatients and inpatients. You will a be involved in quality assurance activities with regards to the laboratory and you will work with staff specialists to obtain TSANZ accreditation. There is a scope for research in respiratory physiology and you will be supported to participate in and to initiate research projects.   

This is a permanent Senior Lung Function Scientist Position

Our ideal candidate will have excellent attention to detail and good communication skills. He/She will be able to cope with a busy workload. Leadership and managerial skills are important. We are looking for someone who can perform all respiratory diagnostic tests independently, to a high standard and has an interest in quality control and service development.

Blacktown Hospital is a vibrant urban tertiary hospital. We are located in the centre of the Northwest growth corridor in Sydney with a large number of young families moving to the area. The Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine is a relatively young department with mixture of enthusiastic junior and senior staff specialists.

Essential Criteria:

  1. Bachelor of Science Degree or equivalent.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  2. Proficient with the equipment and methods/procedures for measuring a variety of lung function tests, including but not limited to, spirometry, lung volumes, carbon monoxide diffusing capacity and bronchial provocation tests.
  3. Demonstrated attention to detail and administrative skills.
  4. Time management and organisational skills.
  5. Ability to solve problems.
  6. Commitment to excellence and continuous quality improvement.
  7. Experience with complex pulmonary function testing, e.g. cardio pulmonary exercise testing.
  8. Experience with supervision of junior scientists and with the managing of a lung function laboratory.
