What you'll be doing
The primary purpose of the Research Assistants (RA) role is to undertake a defined research project requiring specialist computer science training and data mining/machine learning experience. Producing high quality research outcomes under the direction of the Professorial project leads and grant investigators.

The research assistant will work with a well-established and highly regarded cancer research team at Kid’s Research, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and in collaboration with computing experts from the School of Computer Science, Faculty of Engineering and IT, University of Technology Sydney.

The project “Data Mining for Survivorship: Navigating the genomic environment of childhood cancer.”

The RA will be required to interrogate a range of genomic data sets derived from cancer patients to identify complex traits that define why patients may or may not respond well to standard therapies such as toxic chemotherapy and radiotherapy. This study takes a more nuanced approach to ask what are the genomic traits that characterize patients who respond well to therapies and survive, and can these characteristics be identified earlier in a patient’s journey, specifically during diagnosis.
To achieve this, the Research Assistant will be required to undertake deep computational analytics establishing novel data mining strategies to identify patterns of genetic signals that are common to survivors but unique from patients who have a poor treatment response. Identifying patterns of change across combinations of genetic activity, genetic change, epigenetic signals that characterize survivors using data sourced from well-established public domain open access datasets. The RA will use machine learning strategies incorporating deep learning, anomaly detection and diffusion modelling, explainable AI and visual analytics including novel immersive space visualizations to validate.

The RA will pursue tasks which involve data management, coding and algorithm development, application of computing languages including Python and C/C++, and use of machine learning strategies including convolutional neural networks, transfer learning methods and other artificial intelligence or machine learning methods.

Excellent role for a recent graduate to develop their research skills in preparation for taking on a higher degree learning (eg a PhD).

  2. Excellent working knowledge of computer science research methods utilizing data mining, machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques, with specific experience with deep learning.
  3. Demonstrated experience in high performance computing data collection, database management and quality assurance as well as establishing, optimising and testing data-driven analyses within a research setting.
  4. Demonstrated understanding of biomedical data, its source, and characteristics with a focus on data derived from biospecimens including genomic and proteomic data.
  5. Possess high levels of organisation and meticulous data management and recording of source code during experimentation. Evidence of efficient time management and task planning.
  6. A sound understanding of data confidentiality and principles of ethical research practice.
  7. Evidence for a high standard of communication skills and demonstrated ability working effectively both independently and within dynamic research teams.
