About the role:
Provide safe, compassionate woman-centred care within the maternity and gynaecology service ensuring care is delivered in partnership with women and their families. Take a leadership role in coordinating midwifery care, working in partnership with Registered Nurses, Student Midwives, Assistants in Midwifery, and the multidisciplinary team in a collaborative model which places the woman at the centre of her maternity care.

Midwives employed in John Hunter Maternity Services will have opportunities to rotate to all areas of maternity services including high-risk antenatal, antenatal clinic, birth suite, and postnatal.

Shifts are a 7-day roster including a range of shifts. Some areas of Maternity Services are offering 12-hour shifts for staff for work-life balance. This would be for discussion with the individual managers of the unit.
  • We have a great supportive team of clinical leads 24/7 supporting midwives in all areas of Maternity Services.
  • We offer face-to-face education for all staff to ensure they are compliant with face-to-face training.
  • We have clinical midwifery educators who specialise in all areas of maternity and support all staff coming into the service.
  • All staff are provided with orientation days in all areas.


Where you'll be working:

John Hunter Hospital Maternity Services is one of the largest level 6 tertiary hospitals in NSW offering services to women requiring a higher level of care across the district. John Hunter Hospital is located in the Newcastle area, just 20 minutes away from local beaches and cafes.

Our maternity service works collaboratively with a highly collegial multidisciplinary team consisting of medical staff, nursing, midwifery, physiotherapists, social workers, and more to ensure that the highest quality of care is offered to women and their families.

This role is accepting overseas candidates with AHPRA and ANMAC assessment for ANZSCO code 254111 Midwife.

An eligibility list will be created for future permanent full or part time and temporary full or part time vacancies.

The minimum hours per week for part-time staff is 16 hours per week.

This is a Category A position
. Recommended applicants will be reviewed for compliance with NSW Health policy directive PD2023_022: Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Specific Diseases for Category A positions prior to offer. All new employees must agree to comply with the requirements outlined in the policy.  

All NSW Health workers are required to have completed a primary course of a COVID-19 vaccine which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA).

Acceptable proof of COVID-19 vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement (IHS), or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate, or AIR COVID-19 and Influenza IHS. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.
