What you’ll be doing

 

Work as a Provisional Fellow in an active haematology unit covering all aspects of general haematology including a strong focus on malignant haematology and thrombotic disorders. The role will prepare you in transitioning to consultancy with opportunities to coordinate teaching and training of junior colleagues as well as ample clinic experience. The Department has a large clinical trials unit which will expose you to a breadth of therapeutic interventions as well as registry experience. Opportunities will also be available to be involved in research (laboratory or clinical).

 

This position is a full-time position (flexible hours considered) for the duration of one year commencing in February 2026. The fellow will work with other trainees rotated from the East – Coast Network into St George Hospital.

 

The primary location of this position will be at St George Hospital although the position also involves occasional support at Sutherland Hospital.

 

Candidates completing their training in haematology or recently qualified from Fellowships of RACP and RCPA are welcome to apply.

 

St George & Sutherland Hospitals are both part of the South East Sydney and Illawarra Health District Haematology Training Network. The St George Hospital Cancer Care Centre is one of the busiest Comprehensive Cancer Centres in New South Wales and provides co-located medical oncology, radiation oncology and haematology services. The St George Hospital Clinical Research Unit conducts clinical research into cancer across a wide range of major tumour streams as well as across multiple disciplines.

 

The 10 Haematologists at St George Hospital pride themselves on providing excellent training opportunities as well as exposure to their own professional interests across research, medical education and quality improvement.

St George Hospital and Health Services is an accredited, principal teaching hospital of the University of New South Wales. Selection Criteria

  1. MBBS or equivalent, current general registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  2. Completion of Part 1 requirements for Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
  3. Completion of Part 1 requirements for College of Pathologist preferable but not essential
  4. Demonstrated ability to manage a project (For example research, quality assurance) & demonstrated ability in basic research skills; literature review; critical thinking; data collection; data analysis and reporting
  5. Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise
  6. Demonstrated organisational skills, good time management skills and capacity for self-directed learning
  7. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal & communication skills and Capacity to work within a multi-disciplinary team
  8. Commitment to core values of hospital based medical practice: patient care, teaching, research and quality improvement
