About the role

The Principal Epidemiologist role leads scientific output from the Lumos program and supports other epidemiological endeavours in the System Monitoring and Insights team as required.


The role:

  • provides expert advice, sets the analysis agenda, and coordinates the design, implementation and interpretation of investigations using Lumos and other data as relevant
  • supports enhancement of the Lumos program to ensure it addresses NSW Health strategic priorities
  • supports analytical design and interpretation for external projects that use Lumos or other relevant data.


Health Manager level 4, starting salary from $141,974 - $169,151 plus Super and annual leave loading, with a 38- hour work week.


What you will do

  • Lead and manage the planning and delivery of critical and highly complex systems to deliver organisational objectives from the Lumos program and other data collection and linkage activities for monitoring and evaluating priority initiatives in NSW Health.
  • Lead all aspects of the project management cycle for epidemiological investigations, including preparing analysis plans, identifying and allocating resources, developing and managing budgets, and delivering high quality reports to ensure program outcomes are achieved on time, on budget, to quality standards and within agreed scope.
  • Design and oversee analytical approaches to address organisational objectives and provide value to stakeholders. Produce reports and other outputs using innovative technological solutions to deliver high quality, readily accessible and relevant information for the organisation and stakeholders.
  • Lead and manage project team/s to successfully deliver all key milestones and outcomes of the project/s. Guide and supervise other staff to achieve the priorities of the organisation.
  • Work with stakeholders across internal and external departments /organisations including Local Health Districts (LHDs), eHealth, Agency for Clinical Innovation (ACI), and other Health Agencies and Alliances in order to coordinate systems, data, people and processes to ensure that information needs are achieved for the team.


About you


We are seeking motivated and committed individuals who can support the work of NSW Health with: 

  • Qualifications or equivalent in public health, epidemiology or project/business management in the health sector, including experience delivering on with the implementation of complex information systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in all aspects of epidemiological project management including leading and driving initiatives, project planning, managing resources and negotiating implementation outcomes.
  • Highly advanced written and verbal communication skills, particularly in conveying epidemiological concepts through high quality presentations and written materials.

  • Strong stakeholder engagement experience, including the ability to maintain effective relationships and a consultative approach to the design and delivery of monitoring and evaluation initiatives.
