The Children’s Hospital at Westmead has a great opportunity for a passionate Orthotist to join our highly skilled team working in a diverse multidisciplinary caseload. The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for providing orthopaedic management however will also support neurological spinal, burns and rehab related conditions. The Orthotics department consists of an experienced and dynamic team of 16 staff, with an on-site manufacturing facility incorporating advanced CADCAM technology alongside a traditional plaster room
What you'll be doing
Primary Function
Responsible for providing clinical, technical and administrative aspects of orthotic care to patients referred to the Orthotics Department, and through participation in the Orthotics team, works towards the achievement of the mission, philosophy and objectives of the Orthotics Department and the Sydney Children's Hospital Network.
Level 1 Health professionals are newly qualified employees or beginning practitioners who are developing their skills and competencies under professional supervision. Level 1 staff exercise professional judgement commensurate with their years of experience, as experience is gained, the level of professional judgement increases and direct professional supervision decreases. Level 1 staff participate in quality activities and workplace education. After working as a health professional for 12 months, Level 1 staff may be required to provide supervision to undergraduate students on observational placements and to work experience students.
Level 2 health professionals are expected to have obtained respective new practitioner competencies and to perform duties in addition to those at Level Health professionals at this level are competent independent practitioners who have at least 3 years clinical experience in their profession and work under minimal direct professional supervision.
Positions at this level are required to exercise independent professional judgement on routine matters. They may require direct professional supervision from more senior staff members when performing novel, complex or critical tasks. Level 2 staff may be required to supervise Level 1 health professionals and technical and support staff as required. Level 2 health professionals may be required to teach and supervise undergraduate students, including those on clinical placements. Positions at this level assist in the development of policies, procedures, standards and practices, participate in quality improvement activities and may participate in clinical research activities as required.
- Manage an orthotic caseload with supervision as required to meet the needs of patients and families.
- Provide an orthotic service in keeping with the competency standards of the Australian orthotic and prosthetic association inc.

- Permit effective evaluation of the orthotic service and strive to continually improve the devices and the service we provide to our patients and families.

- Participate in performance review to help insure continuous improvement
- Participate in on-going education
- Education, support and promotion of the orthotic profession
- Maintain accurate patient statistics and records
- Participate in team and department meetings, in-service sessions, quality activities and staff appraisals
- Bachelor degree in prosthetics and/ or orthotics which provides eligibility for membership of the Australian Orthotic Prosthetic Association, or other qualification deemed equivalent by the employer.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work autonomously and within teams.
- Prior experience working at an orthotic or prosthetic facility is desirable, but not essential.Willingness to undergo further professional development and contribute to research.
