What you'll be doing
The location of this AHA role is within the RHW NICU – which is a statewide specialist referral service that provides care to newborn babies with complex illnesses requiring sophisticated technology and surgery.
The primary purpose of the NICU AHA is to provide support to dietetic and nursing staff in preparing oral and enteral feeding regimens. The AHA is responsible for accurate and safe measurement, preparation and storage of breast milk, fortifiers and formula that are required for a patient’s feeding regimen. The AHA will also be required to assist the NICU dietitian and nursing staff in regular audits to ensure growth and nutrition policies and procedures are adhered to.
The critical nature of the babies admitted to the RHW NICU mean that their condition can change rapidly. Consequently, adjustments to their feeding regimens are made regularly. The AHA will need to have a high level of communication with the NICU multi-disciplinary team to ensure the appropriate adjustments are made to their breast milk fortification and/or formula. The AHA will need to develop strong relationships with the NICU team and be flexible to a changing level of patient acuity.
- Completion of an Allied Health Assistant (Nutrition and Dietetic Assistant) Certificate III or IV or equivalent undergraduate food/nutrition degree or work experience, and a willingness to work towards certification
- Experience working with babies/children and their families
- Demonstrated ability to prioritise workload, meet deadlines and complete activities in a timely manner
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate across all levels of an organisation
- Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team
- Demonstrated computer literacy skills and knowledge of Microsoft office and email applications
