What you'll be doing
It is expected that the CMO has been exposed to all aspects of general paediatric medicine and is able to competently assess children presenting to the Emergency Department and make appropriate provisional diagnoses and management plans. The CMO is also expected to be proficient at both neonatal and paediatric resuscitation. The CMO will be exposed to a broad range of developmental and behavioural problems and they are expected to undertake the assessments as part of the multidisciplinary teams and independently where required.
Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the medical officer's skills, knowledge and experience. The CMO will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO). All patients managed within the hospitals of the health district are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.
Essential Requirements
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
- Minimum four years experience in general paediatrics in a metropolitan hospital or tertiary paediatric centre with demonstrated ability to work at CMO level.
- Demonstrated clinical practice as a registered medical practitioner in the last 2 years in a setting appropriate to the needs of the position.
- Demonstrated experience and training in paediatric procedural and resuscitation skills including venepuncture, cannulation, bladder catheterisation and lumbar puncture.
- Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development and self-education.
- This position is subject to an appropriate supervision level which can be supported by the health agency.
- If the incumbent's registration conditions include supervision requirements, the level of supervision must be able to be supported by the health agency for this role
- Valid Working with Children Check, cleared National Police Check.
- To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy, this includes any amendments made from time to time.
Selection Criteria
- Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.
- Demonstrated experience and training in paediatric procedural and resuscitation skills including venepuncture, cannulation, bladder catheterisation and lumbar puncture
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in a supervised clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
- Adept ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team with an understanding of the roles of the doctor and other members of the healthcare team.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, family members and others members of the health care team.
- Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
- Evidence of continuing professional development and commitment to self-education.
