Apprentice Plumber – John Hunter Hospital Campus
In this role, you will begin your journey in the plumbing trade, developing hands-on skills while supporting qualified tradesmen at the John Hunter Hospital campus. As an Apprentice Plumber, you will assist with the maintenance and repair of hydraulic systems across the campus and associated buildings. This includes, but is not limited to, work on water supply systems, drainage, roofing, guttering, and other plumbing-related equipment—ensuring all tasks are carried out safely and efficiently.
You will work alongside a team of six qualified Plumbers and receive ongoing support from John Hunter Engineering management, Training Services NSW, and Apprenticeship Support Australia’s Newcastle office to guide you through your apprenticeship which is a four-year apprenticeship in Painting trade
- This is an opportunity to work for the largest local health district in NSW which services a population of more than 900,000 across the Hunter, New England and Lower Mid North Coast areas. John Hunter Hospital is a Level 6, tertiary referral, major trauma and teaching hospital and is the largest hospital in the Hunter New England Local Health District. HNELHD has strong, innovative connections with the University of Newcastle and Hunter Medical Research Institute.

The John Hunter Engineering Department consists of 51 staff members. With the exception of the Engineering Control Room and the Management team, the majority of staff operate on a standard day shift, commencing at 7:00 AM and concluding at 3:57 PM. This schedule entails 8.45 hours of work per day and allows for a nine-day fortnight, with one unpaid rostered day off.
The Apprentice Plumber will work under the supervision of Trade Qualified Plumbers and may be assigned to tasks across any department or facility within the John Hunter campus, including associated buildings.
About You:
- Completion of at least Year 10 schooling is required; however, completion of Year 12 is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated technical and mechanical aptitude, with a genuine interest in tasks related to the plumbing trade.
- Strong mathematical and problem-solving abilities, with a high level of attention to detail and a commitment to quality and safety.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with proficiency in basic computer use.
- Proven ability to follow precise instructions from supervisors, requiring active listening, clear communication, and effective teamwork.
Completion of a trade-related pre-apprenticeship course, trade school program, or relevant work experience in the plumbing or construction industry will be highly regarded.
