About the Opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Genetic Counsellor to take on a senior role in a fast- paced and dynamic Genetics service. This role will suit a Genetic counsellor with excellent interpersonal skills and several years of clinical experience.

The Liverpool Hospital Clinical Genetics department services the whole of South West Sydney. This region has one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse communities in Sydney. Our service manages general (non-cancer, paediatric, adult) and prenatal genetic cases.

 You will have the opportunity to work with clients from many walks of life, providing a broad case-mix and a rewarding clinical experience. You will lead a team of genetic counsellors who are committed to patient-centred high quality care. The role involves managing a clinical caseload autonomously with geneticist input, collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, mentorship/supervision of junior genetic counsellors as well as contribution to policy development and service enhancement initiatives.

 

What You'll be Doing
To provide comprehensive genetic counselling with minimal supervision from a Clinical Geneticist, including working autonomously for prenatal genetic counselling and cases of a complex nature.

To provide management, support and supervision to level 1 and 2 genetic counsellors in SWSLHD , Southern NSW LHD (SNSWLHD) and Murrumbidgee LHD (MLHD).

To develop, design and implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient outcomes across SWSLHD.

 

Where You'll Be Working 
Liverpool Hospital, founded in 1813, is the major health service for south-western Sydney, providing services to the local government area of Liverpool City Council as well as district services to residents and visitors in the area. It also provides a range of state-wide services in areas such as critical care and trauma, neonatal intensive care and brain injury rehabilitation.

The Hospital provides a health service of international standing, with 23 operating theatres, capacity for 877 beds, diagnostic and imaging services, emergency and trauma care, maternity, paediatric, cancer care, mental health, ambulatory care, allied health and medical and surgical services from birth to aged care.

Liverpool Hospital is currently undergoing a major redevelopment. The $790 million Liverpool Health and Academic Precinct (LHAP) project will provide enhanced facilities and an increased capacity to meet future significant population growth for South Western Sydney.

Liverpool Hospital is a principal referral and teaching Hospital of the UNSW Sydney and the Western Sydney University and also welcome students from over 20 universities and colleges.

Located in the heart of Liverpool City, the hospital is close to public transport, shopping centres and eateries.

  1. Must have an undergraduate degree in a non-nursing, non-medical discipline and hold a post graduate qualification in genetic counselling or equivalent. In addition, have obtained HGSA certification in genetic counselling (Part II), or working towards obtaining Part II certification and holds a relevant higher degree or qualification.
  2. Demonstrated extensive knowledge and experience in the provision of genetic counselling for prenatal and general genetics with minimal supervision
  3. Demonstrated advanced reasoning skills and ability to prioritise, work to deadlines and operate with a high degree of autonomy.
  4. Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills with proven excellent interaction with colleagues at all levels in the health field.
  5. Demonstrated ability to provide senior level of supervision and mentoring to staff and/or students.
  6. Demonstrated experience in planning, implementing and evaluating clinical services to enhance service delivery.
  7. Demonstrated ability to project manage within a multidisciplinary team.
  8. Working knowledge of NSW Ministry of Health and HGSA policies and protocols, including consent forms pertaining to genetics services, and a sound understanding of issues related to confidentiality, ethics and cultural diversity.
