About us


Reporting to the Chief Health Officer, Health Protection NSW (HPNSW) is responsible for surveillance and public health response in NSW including collecting and managing and maintaining data systems for notifiable conditions, monitoring the epidemiology of notifiable infectious diseases, and taking appropriate action to prevent, control and minimise the impact of these diseases. It also provides public health advice and response to environmental issues affecting human health.


The Epidemiology Data and System (EDS) branch focuses on creating and managing sustainable data systems, and provides epidemiological data, information, intelligence, and expert advice to support an effective public health response across the Public Health Network and to inform and evaluate public health policy in relation to conditions notifiable under the Public Health Act and emerging conditions of public health importance. The Branch works in close collaboration with Health Protection NSW branches.


About the role


The Data Analyst will work in the Epidemiology and Data Systems team, Health Protection NSW (HPNSW). The Data Analyst is responsible for analysis and enhancement of routine reporting, providing operational intelligence and real time situational analysis, and preparing and providing data to external agencies. The Data Analyst will respond to queries and information requests and other duties as required. Data Analysts primarily work on data covering any notifiable condition or health protection matter as the need arises.


The Data Analyst will work with staff and managers in EDS and across HPNSW to develop, implement and refine processes and procedures for the collection and management of data to enable protection of public health. This position may be surged to other HPNSW units to meet business needs.


Health Manager level 2, starting salary from $109,857 - $129,624 plus Super and annual leave loading, with a 38 hour work week.


What you will do

  • Enhance and streamline data transformation and surveillance processes.
  • Provide support for users working with data extracts and prepare datasets for external stakeholders.
  • Liaise with data providers and subject matter experts to ensure correct translation between source data and stored data.
  • Prepare aggregate data and visualisations for reporting and policy teams.
  • Analyse data to support operational intelligence from real-time situational analysis including problem solving and attention to detail when dealing with complex data.


About you:


We are seeking motivated and committed individuals who can support the work of NSW Health with:


Selection Criteria:

  1. Postgraduate qualifications in public health (quantitative emphasis), data analytics or biostatistics and/or equivalent experience.
  2. High level of experience in application of statistical or data analytic techniques, using R/SAS or equivalent statistical packages, applied to the analysis of population health data.
  3. Experience handling complex data systems preferably in health or laboratory contexts.
  4. High level proven problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  5. Strong communications skills, including the ability to liaise with a diverse group of co-workers and stakeholders to provide information in a timely and effective manner.
  6. Good organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  7. Experience with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and able to create presentations, graphs, reports, and diagrammatic representations of concepts for a variety of work situations.
